As you may recall from last month, the owners of Stay Classy, the Will Ferrell-themed bar that opened last October on Rivington Street, announced plans to open another personality-driven establishment — this time in the East Village.
In the weeks ahead, Beetle House — "with an atmosphere and menu inspired by the works of Tim Burton" — is opening at 308 E. Sixth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.
The bar will feature drinks such as:
• Beetlejuice – Muddled blackberry and limes, Tequila, Blackberry schnapps, Angostura bitters, splash of cranberry. $14
• Edward’s lemonadee – Old fashioned with Orange bitters $12
• The headless horseman – Hendricks Gin, Lillet blanc, Cointreau, dash of absinthe, fresh lemon juice. Garnished with an orange peel. $16
• Chocolate factory martini – Vanilla vodka, Dorda chocolate liqueur, cream, creme de cocoa. Garnished with a chocolate bar. $14
You can check out the rest of the drinks and food menu at the Beetle House website. (You may text them for a preview invite.)
The space was, until last month, home to Confessional, who announced that they'd be moving to a new location. The space later hit the market for $8,500 a month plus $125,000 key money.
Thank you to Vinny & O for the tip! Time Out had a small write up of Beetle House this week, though the piece doesn't appear to be online.
Previously on EV Grieve:
Report: East Village to be home to a Tim Burton-themed bar
Will Ferrell and Tim Burton...barf.
Pretty soon we're going to have to change the name of the neighborhood to Kindergarten Village. Jesus, are there no adults left in NY any more?!?
they barely even bother to pretend they are serving food - this generation can't even drink alcohol unless its mediated by "celebrity".
Hang on a second..a Will Ferrel themed bar?? Holy crap...
If I ever order a $16 drink on 6th Street I pray I'm beheaded after for displaying such a blatant disregard for money.
How sad! I wonder how Tim Burton feels about his name and work being expropriated like this. Could he be getting a cut of the weekly profits for the use of his name? I hope not. One used to go to a bar to have a few drinks, meet friends, engage in meaningful or meaningless conversation. Now it seems you have to be committed to a Hollywood star or to a mixologists latest creation.Ah well!
LOL anon 10:03am. I feel you, there are $3-$5 suds available all over the nabe at much chiller establishments. This cheesy endeavor is clearly gunning for weekend transient and weekday "date spot" money. Won't have a single regular for its to be determined length of existence.
pa pa po
these are nice things
How about a shave.
So in a few months time, perhaps they will be sharing space with Sweeney Hot Toddy's Tonsorial Adornment Parlor?
Okay maybe I'm guilty of judging (or even worse, gasp, PRE-judging) but this seems like it'll be a place that's maybe sort of fun to do some instragrams at, and tell your friends you went to. But I can't see how a movie-themed bar could be anything other than a fly by night novelty tourist trap. Gonna go ahead and file this one next to "rolled ice cream".
Well this same type of succesful branding strategy was also used for the Adam Purple bar. Oh, wait...
Looks like Times Square is highly contagious this season
"Jekyll and Hyde Club"
BTW, NEVER a buy back at these "theme" bars. I know, in the EV these days a rare occurrence period.
Gojira the infantilization of NYC continues.
Tim Burton must be hurting (Hurton) for money LOL.
How utterly depressing, especially being a Tim Burton (and Will Ferrell) fan. Have we as a culture completely run out of ideas?! Theme bars, of any kind, best placed in Times Square (where we like to keep the tourists, thanks Fran Leibowitz). Yes, the East Village has been "over" for a long time, but the extra nails in the coffin still hurt.
Welcome to Times Square South.
And I was hoping it would be an owl cafe.
I know about tribute bands; are we now having tribute bars?
Why no bird cafe 10:25pm? You could sit there while a falcon stares you down.
