'Karma Police' at the Gatsby Hotel

The Gatsby Hotel on East Houston at Forsyth has a new mural to liven up its rather generic exterior ...

The piece is by Brooklyn-based Rubin415 and titled "Karma Police."

Here's a much better look at it...

  1. Sorry I dont see it or get it...Radiohead reference but where/how? What does this have to do with Houston Street?

  2. Credit Radiohead:

    Karma Police
    Arrest this man
    He talks in maths
    He buzzes like a fridge
    He's like a detuned radio

  3. Yes, nothing like a nice splash of primary colors to brighten up this dreary protuberance.

  4. Unless its a reference to the Radiohead tune, that's a total ripoff of someone else's wordcraft.

  5. It was a personal reference to something being stolen from Rubin while he was painting this mural. Call the police or let karma deal with it.

  6. Rubin thought of the name based on an incident that happened in the process of painting this mural. Someone stole something from the cab while he walked to throw out trash and he was either going to call the police or let Karma deal with it.

  7. Oh I get it. It's a police car standing up vertically. how vibrant.

The owners actually named their dumb ass hotel after the fictional repulsive fraud Gatsby. These maggots are really rubbing the economic inequities and of this city between their target demo and the middle class and working poor in our collective faces.

If there are karma police, Street crime will go up in that section and this will be a homeless shelter in 6 months.

The hack artist of this colorform style mural should have taken inspiration from Radiohead's overlook classic from the same album "the Tourist"

    "Idiot slow down."

  9. It was once and for the longest time a dirt lot with junk in it. Later built a small Howard Johnson's motel on the dirt lot. Then sold to become the Gatsby after a few years..perhaps the new owners were not actually in love with their new acquisition but felt a sort of tender curiosity about it instead.

  10. Should have done something more in line with the novel, such as the billboard, which is itself a lovely piece of authoritarian agit-prop, and would fit nicely in with the nabe. Of course, we can't expect much from post-moderm module real estate hotel tycoons who think geometric designs are the epitome of cool.
