DOT looking for feedback about the Village Plaza

EVG reader Sheila shared this info... reps for the Department of Transportation (DOT) were out on Saturday soliciting input from residents about the Village Plaza south of the Peter Cooper Triangle (roughly that area in front of the former Village Voice Building at 36 Cooper Square)...

They were looking for feedback regarding suggested uses as well as complaints about the recently revamped Plaza, which was part of the $21 million Astor Place-Cooper Square reconstruction project. (While the Village Alliance maintains the Alamo Plaza and the cube, the DOT is responsible for the Astor Place Subway Plaza and this area.)

The reps said that the Village Plaza is available for use by any community group with the proper application.

Unfortunately, as Sheila notes, there isn't a set time that the survey takers will be working here, but they will continue to pitch their DOT tent until they have 100 responses.

Anyway, in case you see them and want to provide some feedback... plus there's a free prize for taking the survey!

  1. 100 responses - yeah, that'll cover the neighborhood. And no set time that you can find the survey takers. What great planning... NOT!

Probably all the responses they get will be from people working in the Death Star building, who'll want more corporate-type crap.

  2. Maybe they'll build a couple of empty kiosks on the taxpayer dime to provide surveillance functions like in Astor Place?

  3. My immediate suggestions: lighting along the 3rd Ave walkway where all lights are aimed on the street, not the sidewalk, regular clean up and maintenance, replanting, a real dog run so people aren't using the plantings for their dogs' business.

I thought Grace Church School had assumed some responsibility for maintenance when this was in the planning stage...

Community groups can bring poetry readings, small music ensembles, book exchanges, etc. to this stretch of the plaza...

  4. No corporate sponsored events, I don't care if there is free ice cream either. Maintain the damn tree wells and water whatever is planted there.

  5. MORE large Live Trees? Real evergreens shrubs trees for all 4 SEASONS ? Make an Oasis out of desolate concrete Island?
Get the campus's involved to create a Real College GREEN ? Install temporary art ?FIX WHATS FLAWED??? Pray?Beg ? Scream?

  6. No corporate events! And something for shade. Some stuff made of wood or something. It feels too sterile.

  7. DOT controlled areas do not allow commercial use of the space. It is, however, open to civic, educational and arts groups with the proper applications.

  8. Wow..shame on the DOT. This is like a "quickie" where the public gets screwed. No time to even moan out loud. DOT survey is a joke. 100 people? Who? Non-residents or residents of the neighborhood? Good thing I wasn't part of the survey or they would have received more than an earful on just how poorly designed, poorly constructed and poorly kept this hole is.
