Report: Lease extension in the works for 14th Street Associated

Owners of the Associated Supermarket on 14th Street between Avenue A and First Avenue are receiving a new lease, though it's unknown at the moment what the duration will be, Town & Village reports.

Stuy Town’s management would not reveal how long the extension is expected to last or other details about the agreement, which was reached on Friday.

Joe Falzon, a co-owner of the store, said, “My partners and I appreciate StuyTown Property Services’ approach and willingness to work with us as we set out to understand how the future changes on 14th Street will impact our business. We’re committed to our customers and employees and will continue to provide quality service and products as Associated has done for over 20 years.”

Last month, there were reports that Morton Williams was taking over the grocery space in Stuy Town when Associated's lease was up on Dec. 31. However, after learning that a Trader Joe's was coming to the new development at the former Peter Stuyvesant Post Office across the street, Morton Williams decided against the property.

The new Trader Joe's is scheduled to open in the second half of 2018, according to a press release from the market.

  1. Very glad to learn this. Associated Supermarket is among the best in the area, not for its selection really, but for the good people who work and run that store. They always go the extra mile for their customers and the store is clean, its pricing is fair, and its long-time employees cook the best hot food for the price in the entire neighborhood. It's the little supermarket that could. I hope they stay another 20 years. We need them and I personally will not shop in another store should it be replaced — And I am not alone in my wish to boycott change in that regard.

  3. This is good news only because the alternatives WOULD BE WORST

  4. Let's face it Trader Joe's when open will be crowded and not everyone is a fan of their stores. A decent market like Associated will still do business well into the future.

  5. although there are some good deals at trader joes they are more of a student oriented fast food market
while associated will continue as one of the few reliable old time neighborhood supermarkets left in our city.

    good news for a change.

  6. With TJ's across the street who else was going to rent the store? Stytown had no choice. Associated and the tenants won.

  7. Kudos to E.Vill resident Kirsten Theodos (takebacknyc.nyc) for being the major solo activist on this issue -- helping to keep it "hot" enough that STPCV had to act. Along with the Tenants Association of course!

  8. Well good, even if certain people had to be shamed into cutting a reasonable deal.
