Following an opening sneak preview back in June, the owners of Gelarto closed to make a few improvements to their gelato business at 145 Avenue A at Ninth Street.
On Wednesday, the new shop reopened... EVG contributor Steven shared these photos of the interior...
According to the Gelarto Instagram account, the shop's hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily (until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday).

ReplyDeleteWow, gelato made from milk imported from Italy. That's not very local. They tell me I should try to eat local foods when possible.
ReplyDeletePerhaps someday the East Village will be populated by people who accept the neighborhood for what it is and not how it was (only in their minds) and how they think it ought to be.
ReplyDeleteCan't get too excited about another ice cream stand (and that is what this is) that will charge outrageous prices. Still, I am sure that people thought the same thing about Cones and Sundaes on East 10th Street which seems to be doing fantastic business whenever I pass by--and their ice cream is not gelato and their milk surely doesn't come from Italy. How wonderfully pretentious this all sounds. Let's see how long they last. Will they have the Tartuffo like the stand in the Piazza Nuvona in Rome?

ReplyDeleteWhere they go to in winter? they sell Italian hot chocolate? they close? how about wifi? they have free wifi? and what is their opinion about the new Starbucks opening next door? do they have an opinion?
ReplyDeleteI was skeptical, but I went and the gelato is damn good. It is superior to the garbage that passes for ice cream in the U.S. I am happy to welcome any new business on Avenue A that isn't a front for getting a liquor license.

ReplyDeleteI am steadfast in my belief/opinion that these designer food establishments are fronts for money laundering. Or they are in their own way like new theme rides in an amusement park like Six Flags or Busch Gardens.
I second that 9:23! Their gelato is delicious. I'd eat this in the wintertime too like most people would. And I welcome any business — chain or not — that isn't a bar on Avenue A or any other street in this neighborhood.

ReplyDeleteThey are serving up quality product, and they are trying to be good neighbors unlike the douchebros who opened up Empire Biscuit and marketed themselves to the "drunk" crowd, or any of the bars that have opened on this strip in recent years.
Pick your battles, people. I hope this place does a good business and survives.
9:23 AM what a sweeping statement. I don't know where you've been eating your ice cream. Try Van Leeuwan. One bite and you'll know you're eating quality ingredients. The vegan mint is great even if you're not vegan.
ReplyDeleteTo 12:49: I am the earlier poster. The ice cream in America is horrible but I agree with you VL is good. They make it here and it is comparable to really good gelato. It isn't typical American ice cream by any means though.

I love gelato so my only question is...With so many spaces and landlords; why pick the worst and rent from Icon ?
