Tenants of 10 Stanton St. say they have been shocked to witness unwanted peep shows when they look out their windows at the back of Ian Schrager’s Public Hotel, claiming that the hotel's guests have been getting frisky in plain sight.
“People are seeing people having sex — they don’t even close their blinds,” said Debbie Gonzalez of the 10 Stanton Tenants Association at a recent association meeting. “There are 44 apartments in that back, and these people are subjected to noise, nudity, smoking — it’s ridiculous.”
The Public (Pubic?) Hotel opened in June on Chrystie Street just below Houston.

I guess now that Times Square is no longer the porn capital of America, it's up to this place to assume the peepshow mantle. Dunno how "great" that is, but maybe I'm just not hip or cool enough to see it.
It is disgusting to build a hotel/condo right next to Section 8 housing. Compounded by the fact that the room rates are starting at upwards of $400/night. And the least pricey condo is going for over $4M.

How the hell are they being subjected to smoking? And as for nudity and noise, get over it. This is NYC. I realize you miss your old pastoral views of the old green plot of land. But be thankful that your back facing apartments are not now facing an air shaft. You still have space and a view.

Isn't a mixed income neighborhood the desired planning solution from an economic stability and opportunity standpoint? Seems to me that it is better than clumping all the low-income housing together.

I can understand how some might be offended, but honestly, we live in a society of free will. You can't control anyone, especially whom they have sex with or when.
Those residents who wish to attend "association meetings" can do so as long as they wish. They have no jurisdiction or business telling others when, where or what to do with their bodies. I have a neighbor here on 7th street, who rarely leaves his blinds down, who I see walk naked freely in his apartment across the street from mine. I've even seen him do intimate things with his boyfriend on a few occasions. What am I going to do? Call the cop? I can't do anything And guess what, I don't care. Its kind of amusing actually. But guess what, humans have sex. Get over it. Stop looking if it bothers you.
This is 2017. Not 1957. And its lower Manhattan for Pete's sake.

I just wonder what would happen if a bunch of tenants in Section 8 and project housing decided to bang each other with the windows open in full view of passerby in towns like Brownsville or Washington Heights, two places that haven't been gentrified yet because developers may be too scared to do. I bet the cops would come fast.
This calls for vigilante action, since the patrons of this upper class white trash hotel wants to parade a new gilded age in De Faustio's new fun city. I suggest doing what the people in Venezuela are doing by putting feces and urine toilet water in bottles (they called them molotoilet cocktails I think) and throw it at them or to be safe just throw rotten fruit and eggs to be on the safe side, at their rooftop bacchanalias and at all the suckers on line waiting to get in.
I do remember the HighLine hotel PROMOTING that sexy people were doing sexy things in their big windows. Including planted model types lounging in their bra and panties.

ReplyDeleteThe disgusting part is yet to come when money dries up for public housing Schrager and his like will be there to buy those unfunded buildings for more luxury shit. The city is already considering selling off parking lots and green spaces around section 8 and public housing to fund renovations for those cheaply built government buildings. 10 years late when those renovations need renovation the buildings themselves will be sold to private interest. Getting the poor of Manhattan will be complete, Dubai on the Hudson.
You know sometimes I don't understand what people want on this website. I generally agree with the sentiment that the EV is becoming more and more suburbanized and gentrified, but this kind of complaint reeks of suburban homeowner association nosiness. If you want to complain about huge hotels or crappy yuppy bars I get it, but complaining about what you see when you look into your neighbor's windows or about smoking? I guess that doesn't make sense given the constant longing for the artsy, grimy realness of old New York people also complain about here. It seems like if you want to complain about people having sex in their hotel rooms, you should be living in suburban tract housing in middle America in what passes for a city out there.

ReplyDeleteThese people, the developers and the patrons, all subhuman bags of dead dicks and rat shit, don't have any shame or decency and know they are being coddled because they spend more than the constituency. THIS is the reason why the shitty council, De faustio and Cy Vance decided to ease up on laws on public urination and drunkenness.
In fact, they should set up that camera like they do at theme park roller coaster and water flumes to get riders reactions.
This city is already a damn theme park anyway.
From a legal POV, nothing can be done, unless someone did something within the realm of a public space. Then there is a whole different issue at hand. From what it seems, those in the hotel, who have willfully exposed themselves in vulnerable ways have not broken the law. And while I understand many of the tenants from across the space are witness to intimate acts, they have no power or control over their actions. What can they do? Make people close their blinds in their rooms? That is ridiculous. This isn't a communist state.
ReplyDeleteSo, if I were them, I'd either turn the other way, when it is happening, or move. Otherwise, grin and bear it. Personally, I don't care one way or another. Consensual relations between adults is fun and healthy. And if it happens to be in a window across the space from mine, so be it. I've seen much worse.
So what happens if someone who's a tenant live-streams the "view" from across the way?

If that were the view from my apartment, I'd be pressing my nose up against the glass & doing everything I could to get their attention so they'd KNOW they were being watched. And then I'd give 'em a thumbs-down.
