Club Cumming debuts tonight on 6th Street

As previously noted, actor-author (and East Village resident) Alan Cumming was teaming up with the Eastern Bloc owners to turn the bar on Sixth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B into Club Cumming.

And tonight marks the opening night... there are a variety of events happening in the space, as you can see from their schedule (find more details via Instagram)... there are jazz nights, book readings, duets with Michael Musto, a Crisco Disco night, and so on...

Cumming described the Club on his Instagram account as "a home for everyone of all ages, all genders, all sexualities, who all enjoy letting go and making some mischief. No judgments, no attitude, no rules, except kindness, acceptance and fun."

Here's a mini preview via the Times the other day.

The East Village storefront, previously home to the popular gay haunt Eastern Bloc, is being transformed into a Weimar-inspired cabaret bar ... The modest space will have illustrated murals of New York night life personalities including Joey Arias, mismatched chandeliers and a small curtained stage with a piano.

Beyond debauchery, events will include book releases, “stitch and bitch” knitting classes and tantric sex workshops. “To have a local bar that is home for artists and those who love them, that’s important to me,” Mr. Cumming said. “I’ve always wanted to make people talk to each other instead of looking at their phones.”

  1. "a local bar" that's filled with absolutely no locals since the locals now consist of frat bruhs and woo hoo girls, maybe the Brooklyn kids that frequented Eastern Bloc and the occasional celebrity friend of Alan will make it a destination for lgbt tourists

  2. This will cater to the high not the low. More LES club types who wear designer punk rock clothing that cost thousands of dollars.

  3. Thankful to have an internationally loved and recognized artist, LGBTQ advocate, and local resident, transform our local gay bar into something our community will love even more.

  4. In the Studio 54 days the high and low worked because people on the the low end could afford to live in NYC, and everyone was happy. That isn't the case now. This is a class war and people are being harassed and forced out.

  5. Yes, agree with all the other posters bemoaning the greatly lessened attributes of 'new' New York.

BUT, if anyone is going to add something new & creative, it's an artist with pockets tohat can afford to challenge hedge-fund culture. Club Cumming's queer environment should help foster diversity, in all ways. Good luck to A.C., for at least investing where he lives.
(I'll know it's a lost cause if Andy Cohen hangs out there though...)

  6. All of this babble about LGBTQ "community" makes me shudder. I don't deny that Alan C. is a talented actor who lives in the EV, but he also was looking to make an investment. Good for him. He is neither a God nor the Devil. His club will settle into its own groove, and hopefully, live long and prosper.

  7. Wow, this blog is so full of Debbie Downers. You don't even have specific complaints about this bar, you just want to declare that everything sucks all the time. Someone tries to go against the grain and do something artistic and all you can do is whine. You are worse than the bros and trust fund kids you're complaining about.
