Village Kids Footwear has closed on 1st Avenue



The shop specializing in shoes for children at 117 First Ave. between Seventh Street and St. Mark's Place closed after the day on Aug. 31.

In recent weeks "store closing" signs hung in the windows. I did not hear an official reason why they closed. (One EVG reader and friend of the owner said that business had been in decline.)

The shop, sister store to Foot Gear Plus, which has been in business up the block for more than 38 years, is run by siblings Linda and Tony Scifo.

The asking rent for the space is $9,995, per the listing at Steve Croman's 9300 Realty.

    Bought a lot of shoes there for the kids. The owners were always so friendly and helpful. Obviously tough to sustain that business in the current environment - could always find kids shoes a lot cheaper online - but they will be missed by me.

    Funny how hipsters and yuppies, the real current village kids, dress like children but are too developed to wear shoes that a 6 year old would wear like the ones with wheels and lights on them. This store should have adapted to the current clientele or maybe should have applied for a liquor license.

    Argh. Amazon (and rapacious landlords) eats another one. Bought all our shoes there for our kid when he was little.

    Meanwhile, Starbucks on A was bustling this weekend. Who the fuck are these assholes that patronize that fucking place when you can't swing a dead rat without hitting an excellent indie coffee shop in that nabe?

    so sad to see this place go, we bought my daughter's first pair of shoes here. we bought some shoes during their going out of business sale, according to them on top of challenging business the owner's health was in decline, so they chose to step away from the business for a short while. they did say that they may pop up soon down the street. fingers crossed because this was such a great place to have the experience of buying my daughters first pair of shoes. we will always have that memory!

    I highly recommend Footgear Plus. They sell quality shoes that last a long time and the staff is wonderful. I bough the best shoes I've ever owned there last year.
