Noted

Discovering a flaw in Mayor de Blasio's plan to help curb the rat population in Tompkins Square Park and elsewhere with the $7,000 Big Belly trash can.

  1. I walked past another one of these, at 10th & A, last night and it was pretty much the same. 🤦🏼‍♂️

  2. Where is a reasonable and effective labor budget that provides for collection of trash in this city? My empirical observation leads me to conclude that the city government picks a budget allotment and lets things slide along. Whatever the amount that is being spent is, it is not in proportion to what needs to be accomplished. Thus, the rat and vermin problem will continue to get worse rather than better. After 35 years in this city I can say with confidence that the city government manages a lot of services quite poorly.

  3. Too much, too many people, too much.

The next time that park gets a sinkhole, the city best just leave it alone and let these people just chuck their food truck take out and frappe and iced coffee cups in there. Because that picture is the perfect symbol of idiotic spending programs and lousy contracts awarding.

Looks like sanitation is going to be privatized at this rate.

  4. An now, a passive aggressive note from The Fence:

Dear Park Visitors and Dog Parade Attendees,

Thanks for lining up all of your empty cups on top of me, The Fence. I know that you meant well. But next time, maybe you could carry your empty cups for a block or two until you actually find an empty trash can. Those empty aren’t that heavy, and you will look so cool while walking down the street sporting those cups with a corporate logo. Most of the cups you lined up on top of me will probably blow away into the bushes or sidewalk by the time the authorities come by to empty out my good friend Big Belly™. So next time around you might as well just throw your cups on the sidewalk or in the bushes since right now all these cups are doing is giving me a giant headache.

    Sincerely,
    Your Friend,
    The Fence

  5. The park was left in a disgusting state after the Dog Parade. Really horrible and disrespectful, garbage everywhere. For an event this size, someone (Parks? The event organizers?) should hire trash collectors. I've never seen so much trash left after an event as I did this one.

  6. Those containers are the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. The opening is always covered with unbelievably vile substances and they should be replaced with a better larger designed container. Something rat proof but without that disgusting lid.

  7. I think the problem is illiteracy; many New Yorkers just plain can't read. It's not their fault.

    1. And will thump down anyone who helpfully tells them what the signs say.. where is the laughing emoji....

Ppl don't seem to care about adding their bit to living in garbage. I really wish paper cups would become fashionable at some point . .

  8. One problem is the ratio of people to trash cans. Another problem is the ratio of caring people to uncaring people. Of course some of them shouldn't be blamed since their upbringing was akin to living in a pig sty.

  9. @9:54 - the newer cans that are brown and have the picture of the rat on them have a foot pedal, which is way better than using the handle. The green ones only have a handle. The one in the photo has a foot pedal, but you can't see it due to the sea of garbage.

Don't these things call call someone when they're full? That's the problem - these things won't work at all if no one empties them when needed. The park was a disgusting mess. I've never seen anything like it. This event was totally disrespectful to the neighborhood and its residents. Take it to East River Park.

  10. 20k plus people for a dog parade ... the event organizers should be responsible for the garbage cleanup. The park was ridiculously crowded.

  11. Call for artists! We need a huge statue of a crying native american to stand next to every one of these trash compactors to shame people into not destroying the environment.

  12. 'Looks like these Big Belly trashcans make more of a mess than the plain ol' mesh trashcans.

Great waste of 7K per Big Belly, Mayor DeBOZIO.
