Openings: Ummburger, the Fern, Kokus, though just through Sunday
Ummburger opened this week at 99 First Avenue at Sixth Street.
As the name implies, this place sells a variety of burgers as well as salads. Here's a look at their menu from the Ummburger website...

The drinks menu includes what they are calling "Ummazing Chalices," 38-ounce fish bowl cocktails on dry ice, including the Mari Juana, which pairs apple, pineapple, kiwi liquid smoke and vodka. ($25).
The previous tenant at this address, Mancora, moved across Sixth Street this past summer.

The Fern is now open at 166 First Ave. near 10th Street. The bar-restuarant is from the same folks who run the Belfry on 14th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. Don't know anything else about the place at the moment. The Fern only has a placeholder website at this moment.
This address was previously, in fairly quick succession, North River and The Nite Owl, which closed in September 2015.

And Kokus, billed as NYC's "first plant-based soft serve with organic cultured coconut cream and lightly sweetened with raw honey," is serving its wares through Sunday at the Bowery Market, 348 Bowery at Great Jones. (They started on Wednesday.)

Not only do we get new restaurants, but they also created new foods. Ummburger created its own vegetable - the Nappa Cabbage!

38-ounce cocktails? Glad I don't live near the shitshow this place will no doubt become. Wonder how they plan to deal with the alcohol poisoning that will no doubt result when young guzzlers quaff two or three of them in an attempt to get a quick buzz on.

ReplyDeleteUmmburger should come up with better name for their cocktails, ummazing sounds close to unamazing which will lead to disappointed customers calling it unappetizing on the Yelp.
I never had gluten-free ice cream or dairy, but I bet it tastes like dirt.

ReplyDelete38 OUNCES? Seriously? And "liquid smoke" sounds awful. No thanks! But I'm sure the bro's will be lining up to get shit-faced on fancy 38-ounce drinks.
Bonus points to the restaurant for gratuitously sacrilegious naming of menu items.
Maybe each drink should come with info about where to find the nearest AA meetings? Or will there be EMT's or an ambulance stationed nearby?
That burger mural looks so disgusting, I can't bear to look at it. They'd do well to surround their storefront with plants like the Fern, which looks pretty nice.

Pretty aggressively douchey menu at that Umburger. So nu-American it hurts. Kind of thing belongs in a mall or airport, not NYC IMO.
ReplyDeleteRemember all you future alcoholics, it's not really an authentic East Village bar unless there's a Beetejuice imitator taking selfies outside or offensively themed Fried Chicken sandwiches. Oh, I'm sorry, that was "Merica, the sorry excuse for a bar down the block that closed a half minute after it opened. This is Ummburger, with those totally authentic grafitti looking giant drinks painted on the rolldown gates to remind you why this bar exists in the first place. Feel free to drink as many of those 35-ounce coma-inducing sugar-laden concoctions as you like, but remember that if Mt Sinai's ambulance comes to pick you up off the sidewalk to take you to the hospital, it;s a long ride up to 101st Street, so you might want to pack a lunch and bring a good book. ReplyDeleteYes, 1:17 p.m. we hate everything: that caters to the moneyed tourists and transients; the kitschy "restaurants"whose main item in the menu is really liquor; and to those who patronize such establishments-- they have no connections to the neighborhood the are stomping on and no respect to the residents they are disregarding.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone who is sanctimonious, it's this tyoe of restaurant, its patrons, its defenders, the greedy landlords and developers enabling for restaurants such as this to open, CB3 and SLA for granting liquor licenses to a "burger" joint (ummm, ok, burger? sure)... Ummmmm, Capiche 1:17 p.m. Enjoy your $25 pretentious cocktail. Because you all are so special and better than everyone.

ReplyDeleteP.S. It's like the 'pint glass of beer' - the 'pint' is when the glass is filled to the rim. Anything less, and you are paying for a short.
What is up with that spot on 10th & 1st? They can't seem to keep a business going there and it's always the same basic drink establishment. I think something fishy is going on and I for one will never patronize it.
