Report: Crime spree features suspects being friendly with their drunken victims

DNAinfo has details on a crime spree of sorts happening on the Lower East Side:

A group of thieves has been robbing drunken revelers by befriending their marks and pilfering their pockets when they pass out or by simply asking them to hand over their goods, police said.

Details about one one of the victims:

[O]n Sept. 16 around 2 a.m., a group of three men befriended a highly intoxicated 23-year-old man from Boston as he left Hair of the Dog at 168 Orchard St. near Stanton Street, police said.

As they all walked down Orchard Street, one of the men asked the victim for his phone so he could store his contact information in it, police said.

The victim handed it over, but was then was distracted by the other two men, who asked him for his wallet, which he also gave them, police said.

Later, the man noticed his debit and credit cards had been taken, according to a police report. He never got his phone back.

The victim told police the suspects hopped in a car after the theft, but he couldn't remember where he last saw them before they fled.

  3. I bet their conversation went something like this:

“Hi. So you're from Boston? That’s cool. Our Mayor is a big Red Sox fan. So, you like jazz? Good news: I have a bridge to sell you. It’s called the Sonny Rollins Bridge. Just give me your wallet and it’s all yours. (Opens guy’s wallet) Hmmm. 20 bucks? I guess that’ll do. Here, take your wallet back, and don't lose your Peter Pan bus ticket back to Boston. Just go down to Delancey and take a left, your bridge is right there. No, don't thank me, You’re very welcome. Go Red Sox!”

  6. OK, for all those people here who complain about us sourpusses for griping about the changes in the neighborhood, I say:

Here's a crime spree we can all get behind.

  7. Sounds like a continuation of the old Bowery/Lower East Side custom of fleecing rubes who don't understand the city and get just a little too comfortable. A story that hasn't changed much in two centuries, although lucky for the victims that they aren't dead, as has been too often the case in the past.

  8. As I was walking around upper Avenue A on a recent Saturday night, I was telling my friend how all these drunk bros and sorority girl types are easy marks. They don't have any street smarts and are not at all aware of their surroundings. I wonder if even more of them have been robbed or swindled and haven't reported it.

  11. "Here's a crime spree we can all get behind." "sucker got vamped. welcome to nyc chump."

I'm glad we've established that taking advantage of a "rube" or a "chump" or a "mark" doesn't constitute a crime. Remember kids, it's not illegal if they deserve it. It's perfectly acceptable, commendable even. Hey, they're just class enemies, right?
