Annual New York Cares coat drive underway

The 29th annual New York Cares Coat Drive kicked off on Tuesday at the Bowery Mission.

Organizers hope to collect 125,000 coats this year through Dec. 31.

In the East Village, you can drop off coats at the 9th Precinct on Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue and Police Service Area 4 at 130 Avenue C and Eighth Street. There's also a drop-off spot at the Manhattan Mini Storage on Second Avenue between Second Street and First Street. Find a full list of distribution centers here.

  1. I didn't see it on the list but I recommend you drop off coats at the NYC Rescue mission at 90 Lafayette- just below Canal. They do a coat giveaway on Christmas day. If you drop items here or at the Bowery Mission local homeless benefit directly. I quite frankly don't trust big organizations like NY Cares and I sure as hell aren't bringing coats to a police station. Are they serious?

  2. You don't need to drop a coat in a box at Penn Station or Grand Central. Just find someone and give them a coat and a smile. And a cup of coffee. Best way to do this is directly.

  3. There should be a thermal underwear and sweatshirt with fleece lining drive as that stuff keeps you warm (I know it keeps me warm.)

A t-shirt, a thermal shirt, and a sweatshirt with fleece lining is as warm as five layers (one layer, two layers, and two layers respectively.)
