Boarding up the former Papaya King on St. Mark's Place


On Wednesday, workers boarded up the entrance to the former Papaya King on St. Mark's Place at Third Avenue...


Not sure why this happened ... perhaps to prep for the eventual demolition of this assemblage of buildings on the corner. (Background here.) There aren't any demo permits on file yet. Plus, the timeline isn't clear on when this corner will come down. The Continental around the corner announced that they would close after August 2018.

Or maybe the plywood went up to keep people from camping out inside the front entrance...

    The workers carrying out this task are probably more numerous than this Papaya King ever saw during the time it was open. It won't be missed. I can't wait to see what the new office building will have has street level tenants. Do we dare hope for a Chick Filet?

    Chick-Fil-A? You mean the chain corporation owned by rabid Southern Baptists who donated 5 million bucks to the right's fight against same-sex marriage, support gay-conversion therapy, fought against having to pay for their female employees' birth control (although they had no problem paying for Viagra for their male workers), and along with Hobby Lobby, another hotbed of right-wing intolerance, won the "Faith-Driven Consumer" award for being the top two Christian companies? You think supporting a corporation like that, just for the sake of a chicken sandwich, is the path to follow? Wow. Just - wow.

    9:09pm - Storage for their next failed location because their ownership is the absolute worst.

    They sell some of the best hotdogs if not the best hotdogs in NYC and they're always down to it's og location.

    Ever heard of hotdog trucks, carts, and securing exclusive hotdog sales at events?
