Codex, which sells used and new books with a focus on literary fiction and art, opened this week on Bleecker Street at the Bowery. (H/T to Lola Sāenz for the photos!)
The shop is in part of the space last occupied by the Latin bistro Agozar! ... and Codex connects to Think Coffee on the corner...
The shop, open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, also buys gently used books, per the Codex website.
There's a grand opening reading tonight from 6:30-8 featuring Gabby Bess, Andrew Durbin and Chelsea Hodson.
Here's a quick take on Codex via Instagram...
What? Something....interesting.....and...and.....useful.....????

welcome, used bookstore! hooray!!
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty cool! Since let's face it the bowery is sort of a vapid, intellectual wasteland. I swear just walking around there makes me feel dumber and shallower. Talking bout both present day and ancient history, jack. The bowery boys, bunch of dumbfucks if you ask me. Proto-douchebros, basically.
ReplyDeleteI don't quite view The Bowery Boys in that light anon 9:59, but to each their own. Either way, it's nice to see a new book shop opening somewhere in the city. I hope they can make it work, let's go and support them with business!
ReplyDeleteAmazing!! I've lived nearby for almost 10 years. This makes me so happy. Fingers crossed it lasts.
ReplyDeleteYou could go on a four-bookstore trip like this
ReplyDeleteCodex @ 1 Bleecker Street just before Bowery
west on Bleecker then left onto Mercer for
Mercer Street Books & Records @ 205 Mercer Street just below Bleecker
east on Bleecker then up Broadway to
Strand Bookstore @ 828 Broadway and 12th
east on 12th to
Alabaster Books @ 122 4th Avenue just above 12th
or the reverse route
Finally, a worthwhile business opens on The Bowery. And it’s close enough to NYU to build a good customer base, whch St Marks Books lost when it moved. Good news!
ReplyDeleteCongrats. What a story. A bookstore replaces a restaurant?! What next. Mature people replace frat-rats?!
ReplyDeleteSupport the business so it succeeds!
ReplyDeleteCan we please get an EV Grieve profile/interview with the owners?! Would love to hear how this came about in such a prime location!
ReplyDeleteNow I have some place to walk to! It's been pretty boring with bar after bar after bar.
ReplyDeletehooray! Next a music store for the nabe.
ReplyDelete@ anon 10:54 AM (and everyone else!):
ReplyDeleteThere's also Bonnie Slotnick Cookbooks at 28 E. 2nd Street west of 2nd Ave.

Don't forget East Village Books, 99 St. Marks; Dashwood Books, 33 Bond St., and--no longer a bookstore, but one of the last survivors of Book Row on 4th Ave.--Pageant Print Shop at 69 E. 4th.
