"We have a lot of talking to do": The city's first-ever nightlife mayor, @ArielPalitz, heard concerns from bar and club owners at a public meeting last night https://t.co/EI85t4qOzE pic.twitter.com/ndeXAKNhCC

Ariel Palitz, the East Village resident recently appointed senior executive director of the Office of Nightlife (aka Night Mayor), held her first public meeting last night... in front of a reported 100 club owners, artists and community members at Secret Project Robot in Bushwick.
There was plenty of media coverage, including at amNewYork:
The subject of rents and regulations for DIY clubs and concert halls was the biggest point of emphasis Monday night. Clubs and bars in the outer boroughs, such as Bar Sepia in Prospect Heights, have struggled to keep up with rising costs and threats of development. Owners urged Palitz to push for rent control.
“I want [you] to work to preserve our neighborhoods. Without our businesses and cultural institutions, we are nothing,” Delissa Reynolds, Bar Sepia’s former owner, said.
Rachel Nelson, the co-founder of Secret Project Robot, asked the nightlife mayor to make the city’s inspection and club regulatory process more transparent. Too many times, she said, a club will be temporarily closed because of issues found during inspections by the NYPD Multi-Agency Response to Community Hotspots, or MARCH, initiative. Some club owners said they’ve had MARCH inspections take place without warning in the middle of the night during their busy hours.
And via Bushwick Daily...
Palitz, who owned a night club in the East Village for 10 years and worked on a community board for six, said she sympathized with nightlife venue owners and the issues they face.
“I understand, I live it, I breath it and I am here to really work with you from this moment forward to do what we can to preserve, protect, enliven and make sure it's safe, make sure we’re good neighbors, make sure we’re legal, make sure we’re all playing by the rules,” Palitz told the crowd.
And the Observer...
She said there will be smaller talks and roundtables and noted the Office of Nightlife is not a “complaint line” but will have umbrella policies for different types of complaints.
“We can listen and we can be a voice when it makes sense and just to have that cornerstone, I think, is really important,” Palitz continued. “To be the voice and to be the ears and to have a place that really advocates and speaks for in a non-judgmental, non-punishing way.”

who will represent the residents?
ReplyDeleteI don't know how she will be helpful to anyone — resident or bar owner — in the East Village. The places out in Bushwick and other parts of Brooklyn have different sets of issues than here. Sure, there are some nice bars here but it's a pretty lame bar scene, catered to Murray Hill bros and the drunk brunch crowd. Is she going to help bar owners lobby to open even earlier on Sunday for drinking? Lobby for 9 for 1 mimosas? Will she help residents and block associations lobby against bar after bar opening in previously unlicensed places? The daytime scene here is nonexistent thanks to her time on the Community Board, browbeating everyone into approving applications to better serve her role as a bar owner and "adviser" who helps people get liquor licenses. Another black mark next to the mayor's name for this hire
ReplyDeleteNow if only we could find a Day Mayor, then my life would be complete.
ReplyDeleteShouldn’t this be about daytime retail trying to get a foothold and looking for help? Rent control for bars and clubs? Nightmare.
ReplyDeleteI cannot see this woman in any other light than completely self-serving, and of absolutely no use to the RESIDENTS who live in proximity to all these damned bars.
ReplyDeleteI see her as shilling for MORE bars and trying to normalize the alcohol-centered "life style" that, IMO, is wrecking this city, and she's offering only sparse lip service when it comes to the actual quality-of-life issues we residents are experiencing.
But, like all De Blasio comrades, she sure as hell is getting paid big money as she throws entire neighborhoods under the bus.

ReplyDeleteDoesn't her real estate/nite club integration equity firm give her a big conflict of interest with her new position?

"Palitz did temper expectation, reminding the passionate attendees that her office was geared towards communication and streamlining bureaucracy, not so much for passing major legislation."
Just acknowledging right there that her position is meaningless and won't do shit for the citizenry. Unless some nightclubs have investors from private equity firms.
What a ceremony. It looks like a pre-k classroom with human loads and booze. This is the expression of the arts that the city wants to preserve?

ReplyDeleteIf we had a day Mayor guess what?? WE WOULDNT NEED A NIGHT MAYOR because a real good day Mayorwould be taking care of these problems in the first place, like putting DUI check points on all the tunnels and bridges and re-instituting public drunkeness laws
NO MORE ASSBROS!!!
(I have trademarked that so dont even think of using it lol)
Chrilane is the morning mayor as de Faustio does his daily police escort commutes and "workout"
ReplyDeleteHer job is to speak for the nightlife scene, people. There's already plenty of people speaking out against it. And there is no nightlife left in the EV, it's all moved out to Brooklyn.
ReplyDeletePlease remember all of you she's not here to listen to complaints just generate them. Is Trump our mayor? We get the complete opposite of what we need from the De Blasio administration. Hey Mayor you cannot overdeveloped a city taking away areas which use to serve as nightlife spots then expect to graft it onto residential neighborhoods without pissing everyone off.

ReplyDeletevenueadvisors is up. Nice testimonials from Allen Mannarelli, Darin Rubell and Bob Perl. She says venue advisors was in business from 2014-2017. Not correct. Venue Advisors was around in 2012, when Paul Seres was in it. They had his picture and bio up at the time, along with other information. When it was brought to the attention of CB 3, that there was a conflict of interest, bc Ms. Palitz voted on his SLA applications, while they were in business together, all information on the site was removed. Only a video and phone number remained (copyright -2012). Paul Seres recently had his liquor license revoked. He was in the running for Night Mayor. Ms. Palitz saying that she withdrew from CB 3 is probably technically correct, but it was bc she was in Miami at the time, forgot to submit her application to CB 3, so not allowed back.
She's the queen of NOISE NEW YORK. God, could Mayor Bill be any worse?! YES! YES!1 YES!!!
ReplyDelete@10:29am: If there's no night life left in the East Village, who are all those drunken bro's & ho's staggering along Third Ave. and down adjacent residential blocks, screaming and crying and vomiting and (oh yeah) smoking skunk until all hours? Maybe the "night mayor" could tell all these people they gotta go to Brooklyn to get drunk & obnoxious.
ReplyDelete@anonymous 10:29am - your joking right?
