Pastel Spa & Nails closes on 2nd Avenue; murals outside tanned over
Pastel Spa & Nails shut down after the business day on Sunday... management here on Second Avenue and 12th Street left a note thanking its customers ...
No word what was behind this departure. (And another EV spa closure.) There are approved permits on file with the DOB for interior renovations, though they don't mention anything about the next tenant (or offer clues such as "eating and drinking establishment").
Meanwhile, a worker painted over the murals on the 12th Street side yesterday, as this photo via EVG reader Charlie Chen shows...

Back in September, six artists painted murals on this space — dubbed the #212wall.

That's a nice color. Isn't that the same color they painted the 59th Street Bridge?
ReplyDeleteAnother stores closes, let me guess...too high rent. Looks like these landlords will learn the hard way of asking for too much rent. The ratio of closed stores to opened stores in the EV is growing.
ReplyDeleteThis is utterly devastating :(
ReplyDeleteI don't get my nails done often, but I always went here. Everyone was so nice and made me feel welcome. I am sorry to see the place closed.
ReplyDeleteThe closing is sad, but losing the mural wall is a travesty. Very sad to see it go, there was always great work on that wall
ReplyDeletere painting over the murals: Why. The. F**k. Did. They. Need. To. Do. That??
ReplyDeleteThis makes me so sad. I've been going to Rita at Pastel for 3 years. She is the absolute best. I haven't been able to go in the last month and knew nothing about the closure. Is there any way to find out where she and the other employees went?
ReplyDeleteI agree about the murals. I like the neighborhood colorful and artists worked to make those images. Even if it was a commission, we would have appreciated the gift. But I guess RE people always want change, and MORE MONEY IN RENT. Sorry to see the nail place go — another empty store front. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteA blank canvas for the idtios who decorate the Verizon building on 13th it seems.
ReplyDeletePainting over the murals is the height (or depth) of stupidity. Soon enough there'll be random crappy graffiti there instead of the nicely-done murals. I'd have thought the murals would have made renting the place easier, but hey, who can imagine the workings of a landlord's mind?
ReplyDeleteStupid , stupid , move painting over those murals. I will miss my old neighbors.
ReplyDeletePastel was the best nail salon in NYC, the ladies that worked there were the finest people in the east village.
