It's possible to get the Impossible Burger at Sidewalk now

Just like the sign says here at Sidewalk on Avenue A and Sixth Street.

Well, you probably know the story about Impossible Foods, the company founded in 2011 that counts Google Ventures and Bill Gates among its investors. Basically it's the plant-based burger that "bleeds." The burgers are getting into the mainstream.

This video via Wired has the back story and the science behind (or inside) them...

The burgers aren't entirely impossible (sorry!) to find around here. This Impossible Foods map lists area restaurants that serve them, including Central Bar on Ninth Street and Saxon + Parole on the Bowery.

In any event, Sidewalk is happy about their arrival...

  1. Does this thing taste like a real burger and if it doesn't what does it taste like?

    Fill me in.

  2. I've stayed away from the Impossible Burger so far because as a vegetarian the last thing I want is a burger that bleeds. Unless that’s just marketing hype, and unless it tastes amazing, I’ll stick to the veggie burgers that are already widely available.

  3. @Giovanni; it bleeds beet juice, so I think you can grok the difference.

I've been a vegan for several years now, and I'll happily eat the Impossible burger; I'd just as soon have a black bean burger, though.

I haven't had beef in many years, so it had me fooled; supposedly meat-eaters can tell the difference. The secret is heme iron.

  5. A veggie burger that bleeds and tastes like meat defeats the purpose of being a vegetarian if you're dong so for ethical reasons. The last thing I want in my mouth is a replica of eating an animal’s body. Also, there are many things that taste better than meat, and a good black bean burger (with a nice wasabi sauce) is an example. They could have used their technology to come up with a new flavor or texture, but like most new technologies, our limited imaginations cause us to use new technology to replicate the things we already have rather than exploring new possibilities (see: most “modern” architecture, virtual online worlds like Second Life, and sex robots as examples).

  6. That burger looks disgusting. And food are not toys, what this reminds me of are baby dolls that pee.

Another annoying thing about this is the luxurification of fast food. I assume the price of this fake burger is about $10
