The FDNY responded to a report of a fire on the fifth floor of 93 E. Seventh St. just east of First Avenue last evening. (Eden tweeted about it here.)

Luke's Lobster is the retail tenant on the ground floor...
The fire (obviously) caused them to close early last night. No word on the extent of the damage in the building... and to the restaurant. There weren't any reports of injuries.

This is the second fire this week to temporarily close a restaurant. Fiaschetteria Pistoia is currently closed following a fire Sunday night at 647 E. 11th St. at Avenue C.
In September 2016, a fire broke after inside the Caracas Arepa Bar next door to Luke's at 93 1/2 E. Seventh St. The owners decided not to reopen the restaurant.
So many fires affecting local restaurants, the worst (besides the 2nd Avenue gas explosion that destroyed Pomme Frites and the Sushi Park restaurant) being the fire at 188 1st Avenue that burned down Uogashi sushi, and the fire on Thanksgiving weekend that shut down Bruno Pizza on 13th St. And who can forget the mysterious fire that burned out Artichoke Pizza on 14th Street last year, and damaged many of the apartments above. That’s the downside of being in an older mixed use building, with units that aren’t fireproof. Everyone gets smoke and water damage, and it can take forever for insurance to cover the damages,

ReplyDeleteAnd, on that sad topic, do you have any update on the fire on 13th St. that closed Bruno's Pizzeria? Just curious, as top floor there still has plywood on the street-facing windows.
If you live above these restaurants and see the unregulated tomfoolery going on - its amazing the whole area isn't a cinder
ReplyDeleteThe fire started in an apartment on the 5th floor. The fire had nothing to do with Luke's — except for all the water damage sustained from the firefighters.

ReplyDeleteNote to self: Never live above a restaurant, bar, cafe, or hole in the wall snack shop. EVER! Simply not worth it. I keep thinking of the pizza shack on the corner of 8th and Broadway. That fire from the summer in 2017 ruined at least twenty apartments. Almost two years later, the space is still vacant and many have not returned to their homes. Sad. WTF is going on here with fires in the EV???
ReplyDeleteJust to clarify - 8th & Broadway fire started in Bully’s Deli, not the pizza place. It’s a shame b/c I liked Bully’s.
DeleteThe commercial space under me is used as an office, which is good. I fear that my new landlord will buy out the tenant (who has been there for more than 2 decades) and convert the space for restaurants/bars. God I hope not!
