Superhero's welcome
A look at the recently completed (as of yesterday) Spider-Man mural on Second Street at First Avenue... created by Chilean-based artist Otto Schade (courtesy of East Village Walls). The mural is a tribute to the late Stan Lee.

Could a full out Disney mural with Mickey and those other characters be far behind. Our murals use to be an artistic statements now they are corporate adverts.
ReplyDeleteReally? He's an artist who painted a tribute to someone he probably admired. That's offensive? Get a life.
ReplyDeleteHow is a slightly abstract image of Spiderman a corporate advert? The webslinger's not selling anything, he's just - there.
ReplyDeleteThe way to tell it's a corporate advert is to look close, it might be in Spidey's body or in a graf font design somewhere at the corner. There are murals on walls in the Bowery and by Soho by Canal and west broadway that are clearly fake sponsored and commissioned graffiti.
ReplyDeleteThe timing of this with a recent cartoon movie is would arouse suspicion but graf artists do homages all the time.
I know the artist personally and there's no corporate backing. Came here on his own dime and did a dope piece for the neighborhood to enjoy

ReplyDeleteThere is a Mickey "museum" by the meatpacking district across the Chelsea market. And there is guy Icon commissions to do abstract deconstructions of cartoon characters.
