Brodo debuts on Astor Place this week

The Brodo bone-broth kiosk will have a soft opening today on Astor Place near the uptown 6 stop ... Owner Marco Canora told me they'd be open then "in earnest" tomorrow.

Canora debuted a Brodo to-go window on the First Avenue side of Hearth back in 2014the start of what became a nationwide bone-broth trend. The Astor Place kiosk makes the fifth Brodo outpost in the city.

Brodo temporarily takes the place of La Newyorkina for the early part of 2019. La Newyorkina, which sells Mexican palettas and ices, is expected to return this summer.

  1. Their bone broth is quite tasty but way overpriced.

  2. No matter how tasty this broth is it just isn't a meal yet it's priced as one.

  4. jeez, people, just make your own. You can even get free bones - we've got a couple of cemeteries in the neighborhood. Oops, never mind.

  5. No doubt a good food to put in your body, but silly how it's being positioned. Like some sort of tonic. Good for what ails you etc. There is some truth to it, but you have to eat well all the time if you really want to feel good. Can't just slack off most of the time and then pep yourself up here and there with this tonic or that, this pressed juice, that cleansing water, this fermented kombucha tea, etc. But hey, this angle sells, so what do I really know. Nothing probably.

  6. "Bone broth is essentially stock," he admits. The confusion comes from the traditional definition for stock, which is more viscous due to the collagen that seeps out of joints and bones during long-term cooking, and broth, which is thinner and is made with more actual meat (versus meat-stripped bones used for stock)."

Most real stock IS bone broth. If it gels when cooled, it's bone broth. If it doesn't gel, you're paying for plain ole broth.

  7. Would love to know the permissions of this kiosk. Who gets to decide?
