Patisserie Florentine has closed on 10th Street
After two years serving their signature almond croissants and other fresh-baked pastries, Patisserie Florentine has closed at 280 E. 10th St. just west of Avenue A. (Thanks to EVG readers Dan Scheffey and Tyler for the tip.)
A sign on the door greeting customers thanks everyone for their patronage .. and invites them to their two outposts in New Jersey. Patisserie Florentine is owned by brothers Tomer (the chef) and Itay (the accountant) Zilkha.
This space was previously Cafe Silan, another nice cafe spot that wasn't able to catch on despite quality food and service.
Also at this address and two storefronts away, the former Thirstea CafĂ© tea shop — which closed in September 2016 after seven years in business — was recently converted into a real-estate office.

Another little cafe gone. :( Although this place was super cute, the 'C' and later 'B' health rating they had the past few years wasn't exactly inviting...
ReplyDeleteI must have tunnel vision these days, I often walk this block but never noticed this place.
ReplyDeleteThis was one of my favorite spots for coffee and a croissant. Nice people, they will be missed.
ReplyDeleteWow this absolutely sucks. I will never give Starbucks my business so I guess it's home or deli coffee now
ReplyDeleteThey had the best almond corisasants, this place will be missed.
ReplyDeleteThis is a real shame. Loved the food here...the pain au chocolat and nutella/banana pastries were standouts for us. The super nice fellow who ran the shop, Guy, also ran the Cafe that preceded it in this spot. I wonder if the repeated low health grades scared people away...DOH reported issues with vermin in almost every inspection they did, most recently in a 23 point ungraded inspection on 01/29/2019. It cannot be easy to run a restaurant or cafe in a building that is inadequately sealed against critters. Very best wishes to Guy, hope he lands on his feet.
ReplyDeleteSad, but not surprising given rents and how many people you need to serve to stay afloat.
ReplyDeleteThere is not much foot traffic on this stretch of 10th St. It has to be tough for any retailer to survive there. Btw, did Quintessence close?
ReplyDeleteI actually know Guy, the owner/manager behind this shop. He actually left at the beginning of last summer and had nothing to do with the closure or activity for several months. Since his departure, patronage drove down and they constantly received low grades. I ran into him recently in the hood and he already is with a new business venture. So, one wonders. What really happened here? I will miss the pastries and this spot for sure.
ReplyDeleteWhile I usually was good (to my belt-line) and skipped the croissant, they (and the coffee) were great. The frequent C rating was a little off putting. I was sad when Silan closed, and happy that it continued to be a good place to grab a cappuccino. Though I frequently tried to go later in the afternoon and their closing time of 4, while I guess reasonable given their fare, didn't help.
ReplyDeleteSo sad. Their regular coffee was the best in walking distance and the nutella/banana croissant was killer. I still have one in my freezer. I may just stare at it and never eat it. I feel sorry for all the people who will never get to taste one :(
