299 Bowery arrives on the rental market 20 months after DBGB closed



A for-rent sign has finally arrived on the former DBGB space at 299 Bowery.

JLL (Jones Lang LaSalle Brokerage, Inc.) has the listing. There's not much info, such as the asking price, on the 6,600-square-feet of space. Per the listing: "Fully built restaurant space with infrastructure, kitchen and bar in place (no key money)."

DBGB shut down in August 2017 after eight years in the Avalon Bowery complex here between First Street and Houston Street.

The former Tatyana Boutique next door is also still for rent. That storefront has been vacant for three-plus years.

    The Bowery is such a weird collection of this and that, a mishmash of retail concepts that never seem to mesh together. Remember when Extra Place was going to be the next hot destination? It’s like neighborhood that has been trying too hard to be upscale like SoHo or Chelsea without ever becoming a cool area with galleries and cafes to hang out in first. Just because CBGBs was there long ago doesn’t mean anyone wants to go there now.

    I’m wondering if Sorbillo pizza, the place that serves the soggy pizza that Mayor DeBlasio raved about, will be around much longer. It costs $35 for a glass of wine and a calzone, which you can get for half the price or less at a local pizzeria. If Sorbillo makes it then maybe the Bowery has finally turned the corner. If not then it’s just the next Nicollette, one pizzeria too many, and the Bowery is still where dreams and retailers go to die.

    The Avalon was previously marketing this through The Shopping Center Group. They changed brokers to JLL a couple months ago.

    Th Bowery/3rd Ave is a dirty/ugly street. No charm, No cache what so ever. The city should plant trees... fix sidewalks and install a center island at least from Houston up to 4th. Make it an Astor/Houston commerical strip. The center island totally changed Houston. Made it more human. Maybe then the commercial side could get traction..

    The ONLY places worth hitting on the Bowery now are the longstanding Phebe's and the recently opened bookstore Codex Books at 1 Bleecker Street just off the Bowery.
