Kent takes over Vanessa's Dumpling House on 14th Street

Bargain-eats favorite Vanessa's Dumpling House recently closed at 220 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue for what the sign on the gate described as a "modernization."

The Dumpling House is back open, though Vanessa's name has been replaced by Kent's on the marquee.

EVG regular Stephen Popkin stopped by on Friday as the Kent's team was prepping to reopen for the weekend...

Here's his field report: "The place was looking mighty clean but not renovated — it was exactly the same inside. The same friendly staff was there to great me ... I’m very happy."

No word at the moment who Kent might be — aside from, presumably, the new owner. (Or it's just a random name.) This location is no longer on the Vanessa's website.

  1. I've noticed that back when it was Vanessa's, they wouldn't be open even when the hours listed on their door and website said they would be. I wonder why that was - hopefully this stops that practice. Happened a few times, very frustrating when I'm craving those dumplings! I'm glad they're back.

  2. I'm with you, 3:07. Vanessa's was always a great option for dumplings, and their hot and sour soup was really good, too. I don't recall a time when they weren't open; hoping that Kent does a bang-up job — when colder weather sets in, I'm heading over!

  3. I was in there tonight, and it seems not much besides the name has changed; I ordered my go-to sesame pancake sandwich with tofu, which was exactly the same. The layout of the store, the equipment, and all are the same.

I'm wondering if the "Vanessa's Dumpling" concessions in other locations—like City Acres Market—have changed their name or are remaining the same; guess I'll find out eventually.

  4. I thought I'd be clever and translate the Chinese under "Kent's". It says, Pot Stickers.

  5. So glad to hear that the sesame pancake sandwiches are still available. Only place I know that has anything like that.

  7. I asked who Kent is and he was there making dumplings in the back behind the glass wall. Turns out he has worked in the location for years and was given the opportunity to buy a Vanessa out on this location.
