Vanessa's Dumpling House temporarily closed for 'modernization' on 14th Street

Cheap-eats favorite Vanessa's Dumpling House is currently closed at 220 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

A worried regular alerted us to the closure last week. At the time, the reader said there wasn't any note on the gate for customers. Meanwhile, the Vanessa's signage has been covered. Worse, this location no longer appears along the other NYC outposts on the Vanessa's website.

However, there is a sign now on the gate — possibly post-dated to Sept. 26 — noting a closure for "modernization" ...

  2. At the very least, this is a strong indication that there will be new owners. The handwritten sign is a tip-off that they want the same customers, so it'll probably be more dumplings... but not from the same people.

Another possibility, and not entirely remote: this is a really clumsy transition by the Vanessa's owners.

There's also the chance that this is an intended reboot, but it's no guarantee that they'll actually finish it ever & the space may be for rent/derelict soon.

  3. Aside from their food being both good and inexpensive, they have the friendliest delivery man. Unlike the Hung Dynasty guys who sarcastically huff and puff and roll their eyes and take smoke breaks as they up the stairs, this sassy senior bolts and thanks me for my business, loudly. A loud rainbow, that man.

  4. Not the best Chinese food by any means, but such a solid option at a great price. Hope they stick around.

  5. LOVE this spot and hope they make it back soon. The food there is always hot and delicious and the shop maintains a good vibe, too. Hang in there, Vanessa's!
