Walk on: Holiday cookies await at St. Nicholas of Myra Orthodox Church

The 11th Annual Cookie Walk is set for this this weekend — Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 3 p.m. — at St. Nicholas of Myra Orthodox Church on Avenue A and 10th Street.

And here's how it works via the Church's website:

Our Cookie Team bakes over 70,000 holiday confections — about 75 varieties. What makes the Cookie Walk unique is that you are in charge. You “take a walk” around tables ladened with cookies and hand-pick your favorites to fill an empty box. There are two sizes of boxes to fill: $20 & $35.

The Cookie Walk also has an Instagram account to get you in the Cookie Walk mood...

  1. Arrrrg! Because of Santacon, I'm getting out of town this weekend and will miss this, one of my favorite local events.

When people ask why santacon is such a big deal, this is why. I've put up with it in years past and the general response to my complaints was 'Why don't you just go away for the weekend?' Well, now I am and this is what happens. Residents shouldn't have to vacate their homes and the neighborhood to cater to a bunch of generic privileged destructive frat boys.

  2. The cookie walk! Is there a more wholesome event in the neighborhood all year!? I'll be there as always, I'm already looking forward to the cookies!

  3. @Anon. 8:45 - Don't leave town! Go to the church (get there early on Saturday), fill up a box with cookies, then go home and spend the weekend locked in your house safe and dry and Santa-free, watching TV and ordering out for dinner. That's what I'll be doing! Why deprive yourself of this yearly sugary Nirvana?!?

Elf on the Shelf - cute. But nothing will beat, for me, the tiny mice and hedgehogs made of Hershey kisses that are always to be found at the end of the cookie route.

  4. Love this event. Even took the whole day off for it. Plan on sharing with friends and eating my own fair share in front of some wholesome holiday TV favs, like Christmas Story and Miracle on 34th. Happy holidays everyone. This is actually one of the best events in the 'hood for capturing the Christmas spirit and their gifts selection is wonderful. Stop by! It's for a good cause.

  5. Looks awesome! Anyone know if there will be any gluten-free cookie options?

  6. Hello- I am the Cookie Walk Coordinator and I am so sorry to report that we will not have gluten-free options this year. We are a church with several celiac parishioners (and I am one!) and we take GF cookies very seriously. Unfortunately, the kitchen facilities we normally use to prepare our GF cookies were not available this year. Please check back next year and I hope you will consider coming to the event anyway - the hot chocolate is most definitely GF!

  7. I'd go, but the cookies are likely to all have egg or butter or both, so I'd be just filling a box to give to someone else—not a bad idea, but I could find someone and just give them the cash instead, so the cookies could be their choice.

  8. What a fantastic experience. An unbelievable assortment of cookies. By the time I got home I ate all of mine so planning to go back on Sunday. If you didn’t go on Saturday make the time to stop by on Sunday to pick up your cookies.
