After three-plus years of serving vegan doughnuts from 102 St. Mark's Place, Dun-Well is closing its East Village outpost this coming Sunday (Feb. 16).
The storefront recently arrived on the rental market, and we knew something was up — a move or a closure.
Dun-Well made the announcement on Instagram yesterday:
In order to focus upon new endeavors at our flagship Brooklyn location and to expand our wholesale operations, we have decided to close our St. Mark's location this month. This is a bittersweet decision as we have loved being part of the St. Mark's community over the past few years. We hope you’ll continue to support us as we move into our next chapter!
Dun-Well can now be found in almost 20 NYC locations including several Whole Foods Markets and cafes throughout Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens and we plan to expand our reach to bring our doughnuts to an even larger community.
Christopher Hollowell and Dan Dunbar opened the first Dun-Well in East Williamsburg in 2011. They debuted on St. Mark's between Avenue A and First Avenue in July 2016, shuttling in fresh doughnuts daily from their Montrose Avenue HQ.
Given the outpouring over the closing announcement on Instagram, Dun-Well will be missed on St. Mark's Place.

Really sad to see them go, but this location always paled in comparison to the Brooklyn one. I think the size and lack of facilities limited their selection. I liked the peanut and blueberry choices as much as anyone, but just thinking of the cookies and cream makes my mouth water. At least you can still get them at a lot of the coffee shops around here. Best of luck to them!
ReplyDeleteThey didn't offer a simple plain, old fashioned donut. Everything is covered with layers of sugar and gunk.

DeleteUgh, this is a shame! My niece and nephew are NOT going to happy to hear about this (come to think of it, neither is my wife!)...this place was definitely a staple for weekends or "the kids are in town" breakfasts. And the staff were always very interesting people. Which local places are carrying the donuts?
ReplyDeleteWhole Foods has the most variety, but I've seen them at coffee shops like the bean on 3rd as well.
DeleteI went here at least once a week, and bring all of my out of town or borough friends here as a first stop without fail. I really think this is a loss for the neighborhood - there was something so special about that storefront, and the little donut-shaped flip down tables outside.

This is too bad, they were an oasis in the great donut wasteland otherwise known as the East Village. Meanwhile, Krispy Kreme is opening half a dozen new donut shops all over Manhattan, including one in Times Square with a glaze waterfall that will be open 24x7, but of course none of them will be in the EV.

ReplyDelete@3:43PM The chocolate waterfall and river worked for Willy Wonka. It mixes his chocolate so it's light and frothy. As everyone knows, that’s how you make Wonka Bars. Krispy Kreme is the Willy Wonka of doughnuts, so of course they have a 24 hour glaze waterfall.
