[Updated: never mind] New police barricades arrive on Avenue B

As promised, the NYPD brought in new barricades for Avenue B... EVG contributor Stacie Joy took these photos...

The barricades along the Avenue (from Sixth Street to 14th Street) to indicate the Open Street had taken a beating in recent days.

A walk along Avenue B today... there are barricades up on 14th Street, 13th Street, 10th Street and Sixth Street. The other intersections didn't have any barriers — they were either lying on the ground, shoved off to the side or missing altogether...

  1. Hallelujah!
I only put in multiple 311 complaints, contacted local govt leaders
    Hoylman, Brewer, Rivera, Epstein.
Even with all that muscle it took Over a week!
Special thanks to EV grieve! I included the initial barricade post as a follow-up to my initial complaints.

    1. Thank you for that work! Do you have any thoughts on which action was the most effective?

    2. Offhand, I know that Brewer’s & Epstein’s teams contacted the police precinct.

  3. Metal barricades would work much better for this. Harder to move and won't break.

  4. If the police want a better relationship with the community, they should pay more attention to issues like this which improve daily life in a non-confrontational way. Now that they’ve refreshed the barriers, perhaps they’ll pay attention daily to keep them in place and keep cars out.

  5. We need to remove enforcement of this kind of thing from the police. The DOB has its own group of people who do enforcement of their rules, I think the DOT should do likewise.

The cops are often the first to disobey any rule given to them to enforce.

  6. I get it, but whatever. Nobody was ever on Ave B using the open area. And the roads are how the city all stays connected, so whatever. Though I think it's weird if I was driving I wouldn't move the barrier to go through unless slowly going locally.

  7. So as of 11:45 there were a bunch of blocks with barricades push aside still. (I’ve put a bunch back before but didn’t have time for it today.)
    And some broken already.
If there isn’t a department that’s going to take responsibility for this on a daily basis then sadly I think the city should cancel ave b open streets. It’s not safe when there are streets without barricades and people walking/running, etc., pretending there are.
I say this after contacting all the local leaders Rivera, Epstein, Brewer... last week and 311 a bunch. How many more people have to complain for something to be done?
I know a lot of neighbors did complain.

  8. What's it gonna take to actually have Ave B back as an Open Street? It was fine in the early days. Tonight (Thursday) it was as if there never were any barricades. I found a few pieces here and there and restored 2-3 of the broken saw horse things. Did it get worse around when Phase 2 began?
