[Updated] The fast ... and the furious

There was one vague reader report last night before midnight about some drag racing happening on First Avenue at St. Mark's Place... this is the morning-after shot...

... and there's some video, sent as a response to a Gov. Cuomo tweet warning weekend partygoers to be safe...

The "fake staged drag racing" looks pretty authentic from the video clip.

Updated 7/26

Here's a reader photo showing the gathering — estimated up to 150 people and 25 illegally parked cars — on First Avenue and St. Mark's Place...

The reader who took the photo said: "It was truly one of the most effed-up things I've witnessed in my many years in the EV. And I've seen some crazy stuff."

According to different reader estimates, it took the NYPD nearly an hour to arrive and break up the drag racing — and this was after numerous calls to 911 and 311 and laps around the block by the participating cars.

  1. This so-called race was heard near and far. I'm running out of earplugs!! One nuisance after another. It is true. NYC is one rude boy!

  2. it was certainly effing noisy. There were many cars tooling up & down the streets. They had been modified to roar when accelerating and blast occasionally (it sounded like a bomb going off). It went on for at least two hours on 2nd Ave, 1st Ave and side streets. Never saw any evidence of law enforcement from my window (2nd & 9th). I hope this is not a regular event.

  3. Can you imagine how loud it would have been if the drivers had found second gear?

  5. What is this, the new SantaCon? These cars raced up and down First and Second Avenues, their engines making sounds like gunshots all night long, and no cops showed up to crack down on this nonsense? I saw dozens of cop cars following a BLM march which had fewer than 50 people in it the other day, and the police were zooming all over the side streets on the LES trying to keep up with them. But stage a fake drag race in the middle of the East Village with crowds of people potentially spreading coronavirus and nothing happens.

  6. Sick of the cops ignoring all of this quality of life shit! I support them when they do work. Help the citizens!

  7. Right on, Jess! It looks like the cops FINALLY decided to break up the huge camp-ground on 2nd Ave, at the 2015 explosion site. People have been forced to walk in the street, trying to avoid the ever-growing covid farm.

  8. Don’t forget all the earsplitting motorcycles that accompanied them roaring around our same blocks over and over again. Oh, and to continue the story that also happened again on Saturday night. Not exactly hard to find them...

  9. I live adjacent to that intersection. Nightmare on weekend nights! I called 311 who told me to call 911. Then I called the 9th Precinct. Unbelievable! Scary.
Then I looked at some real estate ads.
