On Jan. 18, a 36-year-old man was shot and killed here. According to published reports, the man was shot multiple times around 8:40 p.m. The Post reported that three men were seen fleeing westbound on Third Street.
Since then, an NYPD vehicle has been parked on the corner.
Residents have long complained about the drug activity on the southeast corner of Avenue C and Third Street, which has been under a sidewalk bridge now for more than eight years. (The renovations to the three-story building, 32 Avenue C, came to a halt in recent years. A full vacate and stop-work order remain at the address.)
In August 2019, residents posted these flyers on buildings in the immediate area... asking tenants to reach out to the NYPD and local elected officials about the "drugs and hookers at the homeless camp" on the corner...
Tonight's virtual meeting starts at 6:30. The Zoom invite is here.
Decades go bye, new buildinga go up and that neighborhood never f'en changes..It was like that in the '60's and '70's when I grew up there..Unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteGood! Next the city should force this building, the one at Houston and B, and I'm sure numerous others in the neighborhood that perpetually have scaffolding up to fix the issues on their buildings and take down the damn scaffolding. It's a blight on the neighborhood and just asks for people to set up camp.
ReplyDeleteIt's been nice to actually be able to not have to avoid that corner bc the cop vans have been there 24/7 since January. But it's been freezing out. What happens when it gets warm and they once again take over that SE corner?
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, a new luxury $$$ condo construction is only a few yards away on 3rd near to C is nearly ready for occupancy! Let the owners and prospective buyers know about the neighborhood and their potential neighbors.
ReplyDeleteThe main issue with this block is the scaffold that was erected here back in September of 2012. This scaffold does not need to be here any longer. I don't know how scaffolds continue to linger even if nothing is being done to a given building. I hope the city decides to wise up and remove the scaffold at this corner real soon.
ReplyDeleteI listened in last night....sadly just more of the same. Doesn't seem anything can be done about the scaffolding, and the cops have their hands tied by the recent changes in policy and bail reform...Real change is going to need to come from the top down by our elected City Officials, and sadly I don't believe that's going to happen until something jerks them into action...which sadly may be an affluent white person being hurt or killed. Sure, a drug dealer getting shot isn't great, and I am glad it prompted the police to monitor the corner, but real change won't come until media/community attention makes it, and hopefully it doesn't take a Karen or a Chad losing their life to make this long overdue action finally happen.
