[Updated] Parks Department clears out the encampment from the Tompkins Square Park chess tables

This morning, workers from the parks and sanitation departments brought up a truck and dismantled the encampment that had grown in recent weeks inside the chess tables area in Tompkins Square Park.

Felton Davis shared these photos from just inside the entrance on Seventh Street and Avenue A...
Per Felton: "How much time did they give to people to grab their stuff and go? I'm not sure."
Meanwhile, the Parks Enforcement Patrol tossed the young adults from XR Youth who were getting ready to hold a flea market with art, clothing and zines... (thanks to Steven for the photo)
Apparently, you need a permit. And if you apply for one, they won't sign off on it anyway.

    1. No one in city hall is up to re election. I see this happening all over the city for the last year, so the park eviction is not a special event.

  2. Good. The city should not allow encampments.

  3. How come the people who sell their crap at the entrance of 9th and A displaying the junk in part along the park fence are permitted? so it seems up to now. Curious to see if they are there tomorrow

  4. Yesterday, I heard one of the parks dept people pleading with/warning the folks who hang out on the tables to please start keeping the area clean. "I'm trying to help you all", she said. After this news, I assume the word was out that the powers that be were about to act.

I feel for those folks but, really, that area has been an unsanitary disgrace for as long as I can remember, and I've been in the 'hood for 30 years. Whatever their lot in life and however they choose to spend their days, they could throw their trash and uneaten food in trashcans rather than have that corner be a rat-attracting health hazard.

  7. An eyesore of a spot, Chess Oh really more like nod tables for addicts . Not a Bobby Fisher in the lot here not even hustler speed chess played. The Park need major renovation and a re think of some of its space. This after all a "Park" a place for fresh air green lawns, trees and plants to be enjoyed from a bench.
