Oh good — the turkey vultures are here

Photos by Steven

Seen yesterday in the sky over Avenue B... a pair of turkey vultures ...
Per this random website: "Despite their intimidating presence, vultures are pretty harmless. They have no incentive to attack humans and they lack the physical attributes that could pose a threat. Although they are carnivorous, most vultures feed only on animals that are already dead." (Audobon has a nice TV recap here.)

Anyway, there are turkey vulture sightings around here from time to time. Nothing to worry about!

  4. Great shots. See flocks of these birds up the Hudson near Peekskill and Croton-on-Hudson.

  5. I once lay in a snowdrift on a very sunny winter day with no wind. It felt so mild (despite the "proper" temperature being actually about 15°F) that I unzipped my anorak and essentially sunbathed with clothes on. I saw a couple of vultures very, very far away in the sky. After some minutes, I saw them heading (very high up) in my direction. Eventually they were circling over me and I stayed very still because I wanted to see them. I had only gotten a good close look at a living one when it was perched on a branch. Their wingspan is huge and their feathers were beautiful in the light. They circled lower and lower, watching me while I was watching them. I think they were maybe 30 feet above the ground when I finally moved a bit and waved at them.

They immediately turned and flew off much faster than they had been circling.

  6. They are called peace eagles by some. They kill no living things.
