City frees tree entombed in concrete on 3rd Street

Photo from yesterday

As noted last Tuesday, to combat rats burrowing in the tree pit outside 185 E. Third St., building management decided to cover the space in concrete.

Several readers had previously called 311 to alert them of this issue. (The concrete will inhibit the tree's ability to take in water and oxygen and could likely result in its death.)

The city has since closed the service request on this block between Avenue A and Avenue B, noting: "NYC Parks performed the work necessary to correct the condition. We notified the building owner yesterday, ordering them to remove the concrete from the tree pit. The concrete was removed on Thursday, May 19, 2022."

  1. This is good news the City actually took action to save a tree for a change rather than allowing the tree to be cut down like all those poor trees being cut down at East River Park.

  2. Thank Goodness the city for once in a great while did the swift correct action in eventually saving this trees life.

  3. Thanks for calling it in, everybody! Encased in concrete would’ve been a slow sad way to go.

  4. They forgot to chop it down and tell us it’s for our benefit in 5+ years.

  5. Excellent. I’m surprised mayor Adams didn’t stop by for a photo op.

    It's on his "to-do" list.

  9. This was likely my first use of the 311 app with results! So happy this was corrected!

  10. Now the City can go back to fining the owners every few weeks for having rats

  11. I Filed a complaint this morning:

    Saturday June 4, 2022:

    2nd Street between Ave A + B ::

workers put concrete on tree pits, then covered it with earth to hide the misdeed.
These trees will not be able to absorb enough water and will eventually die!
Sealing surfaces are the worst thing one can do regarding to floods, heat waves etc.
I don't know if the workers were city employees or private payed workers.
But what happened this morning is irresponsible and unacceptable.
