Key Food is closing an hour earlier now 'due to renovations'

The renovating continues at Key Food here on Avenue A and Fourth Street... this means, per the unproofed signage on the door, that the grocery will be closing now at 11 p.m. to accommodate the renovations.

As previously reported, nothing is off the table during this reorg. As we've seen, the frozen foods section relocated from aisle 1 to 6 ... while the produce was revamped and expanded, just for starters. And we still can't find the Saltines.

There was talk of widening the aisles (do they already look a little wider?) ... but we don't for sure what they'll be doing with that extra hour of closing time.

To be continued...

Updated 7/28

Key will be back to the midnight close tomorrow night (Friday!)

  4. Well, at least we know it's not going to be a potential development site anytime soon

  5. Is this why ALL of the Produce looks old and stale?

    1. People seem to be very devoted to the Key Food "experience".
I for one prefer to do a Shop Fair/Union Market combo.

  6. The produce isn't old and stale @James! I shop their daily for last minute items and feel very lucky to have them on the same block as my restaurant. We live close to the Associates on Ave C and 8th and the prices there are frankly, insane.

  7. The Key Food produce looks and tastes fine to me.

  8. Maybe if they wrapped everything in plastic the Trader Bros and Whole Prudes would shop around a bit more?

  9. @12:43pm they === Key Foods. Whole Foods and Trader Joes both pride themselves on top quality produce but really the quality is just as good as anywhere else. The extra cost you pay for is the plastic wrapped veneer and the 6 block walk back to your apartment.

  10. I'm liking the changes so far. I complained about some of my favorite items being placed on the top shelves, out of reach, and they actually rearranged the products so my items are at my level. Nice! If people have other requests that would make shopping easier, management seems to be open to feedback.

Also, I'm eating some blueberries right now that I bought on Monday and they're still fresh. Gotta be sure they're NJ or Mexico blueberries and not those CA or Canadian abominations.

  11. Produce has improved and is a good value with sales. The frozen food section is terrible now. Prepared food needs a new cook

  12. Used to have good prices. Now its more expensive than New Yorkers Market on 2nd Ave. For real.
And what became of the city that never sleeps. Veselka and Key Food both closed by 11 or midnight. What's 24 hours anymore? Anything? Never expected the EV to be closed up by midnight.

  13. Ray's Candy Store is still open 24/7. Ditto for Remedy Diner on Houston. Veselka said they couldn't find any people to work to stay open overnight. Hopefully, that will change in the months ahead...
