I hate to be *that* person - I adore opossums - but they should not be kept by a human. I follow a rescue upstate that sees a lot of cases of metabolic bone disease, which is caused by feeding improper food to opossums.
The correct thing would be to bring the opossum to a wildlife rehabber - Wild Bird Fund on the Upper West Side (Columbus Ave at 87th St) can take in opossums and get them transferred to a proper mammal rehabber outside the city.
