The 9th Precinct touts a big drug bust in Tompkins Square Park

We've heard from residents discussing the uptick in drug sales and drug use in Tompkins Square Park in the past, oh, two years or so. (The comments in this post, for instance.)

In a tweet on Tuesday, the 9th Precinct announced the following bust in Tompkins Square Park, which yielded "242 vials of cocaine and 108 decks of heroin."

A sign of police activity to come?

Per the tweet: "We heard your complaints about the drug activities going on in the park and we’ve deployed more resources to the park area."

  1. Most likely it is just a delivery guy but still a good start

  3. Small steps and good work. Soon we may have our park back

  4. Thats the amount one courier would carry — so they busted 1 person?

  5. Finally visual verification that my kid was picking up emptied decks of heroin and vials of cocaine in the Tompkins Square Park playgrounds. Great.

  6. I appreciate this! I hope they do it every day. I’m sure there’s enough drug business for that. And then see where the dealers move to and follow them there. Drugs = guns.

  7. @10:18: And your complaint is???? So sorry they couldn't satisfy you by taking down city-wide drug dealing in one quick move.

  8. Yeah, I'm sure all of the other drug dealers were just standing around holding their wrists together shouting "What about me?"

  9. That looks like a personal use haul.

  11. I remember in the 80’s when the playground used to be littered with crack vials, there were clear not colored like the ones in the picture. Thank you police. Please continue.

  12. What happens to the $834? I just don’t see how cops busting/arresting people and taking away their money when they are clearly in a desperate situation is really going to create a sustainable solution. Yes, drug use/dealing in the park is an issue, but these are humans who are in a very bad place in their lives. The bravado and performative heroism of the twitter post really rubs me the wrong way.

  13. @Seedyfilmz, maybe you should give some of your money to the drug dealer.. are you for real!?

    1. I am for real. These performative busts do nothing to create a long term solution. There are plenty of places to look if you want examples of successful interventions of communities with drug problems and this is not how any of them did it. This is just the NYPD trying to glorify themselves and we are dumb enough to applaud them for it. But it’s just a cops and robbers cycle that will continue until a real solution is implemented.

  14. "Soon we may have our park back"

when was the park any different? cherish the neighborhood you have and help it grow, don't whine about some fantastical heyday that has never and will never come...

  15. It's been better and worse. Why not make it as drug-free as possible, never mind that there's been activity for a long, long time.

  16. @seedyfilmz: "performative heroism"? Congratulations on being part of the problem, AND not interested in anything but the perfect solution (which doesn't exist). You're trolling, IMO.

Why don't you explain to us why YOU aren't part of any of those "plenty of places to look if you want examples of successful interventions of communities with drug problems" you mention? You talk in generalities, but offer zero specifics.

    1. If you want specifics: Portugal, Switzerland, Vancouver BC. In the US we tend to criminalize and incarcerate for drug offenses and it does nothing to solve the actual issue. And sorry that I don’t respond well to a “you asked, we heard” tweet from NYPD. That does seem pretty performative to me. Also, you know nothing about me, what I do, or how involved I am in any of this, so I believe your assumptions and judgements make you the troll. I am criticizing a public institution and reserve my right to do so.
