Today in tight, dangerous turns

As seen earlier today on 13th Street at Third Avenue... thanks to William Klayer for sharing these...

  1. NYC DOT truck regs:

"Federal STAA vehicles (pdf) not exceeding 13′6″ in height, 8′6″ in width, 48' trailer length, and the lower of the bridge formula weight or 80,000 pounds, moving household goods can travel on interstates and truck routes. STAA vehicles not moving household goods are limited to one-mile access to and from the exit.

Trucks with 53-foot trailers may only travel on the portions of I-95, I-695, I-295, and I-495 that cross the city between the Bronx-Westchester County line and Queens-Nassau County line. 53-foot trailers carrying non-divisible loads must apply for a New York City Permit."

  2. That's an illegal right turn by a truck from the left lane, illegal also because it's onto a side street where trucks are not allowed unless delivering on that block, by a truck which also happens to be breaking the city's truck length laws.

But the guy has his spiffy grille wreath

Seriously too many people do not care that people die on the streets because of stuff like this.

    1. I do not drive trucks, so I do not know, but do you think the turn from the left lane was necessary in order for the driver to have the space to make a right hand turn there?

  3. @7:12pm: How do you know it wasn't making a delivery on that block? Back of NYU Palladium dorm is on that block & its deliveries get made on 13th St.

  4. The truck's size and length are probably exceeding some legal NYC motor vehicle allowance but the fact that the bus is stopped in the crosswalk adds more difficulty to the turn. If the bus stopped behind the line like it is legally required, either driver would not be put in this situation.

  5. I had a Class 1 license (now known as a Commercial Driver's License, or CDL) for 30-some years, and @mvd is correct - there is no way that truck could have made that turn from the bus lane. You need a lot of space to swing out wide and navigate those tight corners.

  6. Driving a truck is hard, stressful, lonely and dangerous work. And not well paid.
    And a nightmare in Manhattan.

But we all want our stuff, right?
