A friendly reminder that if you're going to bring your Christmas tree to Tompkins Square Park (even though MulchFest is officially over), please remember to remove any pianos that might be attached...

  1. Please help our street trees survive by getting a grocery bag full of mulch and spreading it in a street tree pit. By using the mountain of shredded Christmas tree mulch in Tompkins Square Park, we can help all the younger street trees around the perimeter of the park, which have a low survival rate. The mulch helps hold rainwater in the soil and breaks down to provide nutrients for tree roots. The Parks Dept. is not responsible for maintaining street trees, even the ones around the park. If everyone that loves our park, warts and all, just takes 10 minutes and mulches one street tree, it would be a big help to our neighborhood and global warming.

  2. So sad that people are so irresponsible to place their trash outside for the community to manage as opposed to properly disposing. Embarassing.

  3. As an aside, wreaths will not be mulched. I watched the workers removing them from the pile and putting them in garbage bags, I guess because of the wire used in making them.

  4. Something very John Cage about this. I wonder what sound it will make if it goes through the mulcher?

  6. Newly planted trees require a minimum of 20 gallons of water per week from March through October their first year.
Neither NYC or the company that plants the street trees water them. It is up to people in the community to water young trees.

  7. Thanks, Anon @7:57PM and @10:06AM. I didn't know about either of these things, will be sure to participate in this mulching and watering.
