News flush: The Tompkins Square Park restrooms, open once more

Photos by Stacie Joy

The saga continues... so! After the restrooms reopened to the public this past weekend in Tompkins Square Park for the first time in four months... the men's and women's rooms were promptly shuttered on Monday.

Why? According to a Parks employee, workers installed a new toilet on the women's side, but the flange was faulty and leaking. Plumbers (or whomever) were called to the scene. Yesterday, the repair was made... and the restrooms reopened once more.

Here is the newest addition to the women's restroom... inside a stall still wrapped in some caution tape...
... the new toilet lovingly plastered to the wall "in wonky Tompkins fashion," per EVG contributor Stacie Joy...
For the time being, the restroom hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (!?) ... until the restrooms are locked up again when the field house renovations start this month.

As previously noted, during the 18-month reconstruction project, parkgoers are expected to use restrooms at the McKinley Playground on Fourth Street between Avenue A and First Avenue adjacent to P.S. 63/the Neighborhood School.

  1. It looks like the bathroom inside of a prison.

  2. Great lines, tones and composition in the middle photo, Stacie. Ed Weston would be impressed. Beauty in the TSP women's restroom. Who knew?

  3. I don’t see the receptacle where you deposit your used needles

  4. Isn't this all being torn down soon? What's the point of installing a new toilet now?

  5. A side-by-side with the toilets in Washington Square Park would probably be like a WC version of Goofus and Gallant.

  6. There appears to be no toilet paper, which would appear to be an issue for many. In Paris, I used a public toilet last summer. It cost two euros and had a bidet. Love the French. NYC could take a page out of one their books.

  8. 11:33 - there has almost never been toilet paper in the women's room. Also, the doors don't close and the sinks don't work. It was only when Covid hit that there was suddenly soap available. No longer. Using this bathroom has always generally been a nightmare, but there have been times when I've had no choice.

  9. Because god forbid we get decent workmanship; this is the clown car equivalent of what the bathrooms in Bryant Park or even Union Square look like.

  10. During the closure, what happens to the nice person who stands by the sink you offer you nice towel to dry your hands and fancy colognes and candy? Oh wait, that’s the bathroom at Balthazar.

  12. You’d think at some point local officials and/or Parks would be embarrassed by this literal sht show

  13. These bathrooms will be a junkie haven within 1 hour but nice thought, that the community could have a bathroom for kids and people who actually pay taxes and use the park for things other than scoring and shooting drugs.

Why not have a machine like in many cities in Europe for 50 cents to use.. proceeds can go to cleaning park litter !
