Report: Early morning stabbing on Avenue A at St. Mark's Place

A man suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being stabbed early this morning during an altercation on Avenue A near St. Mark's Place, according to police sources and published reports.

The stabbing took place outside the residential entrance to 131 Avenue A adjacent to the corner Starbucks at 6:15 a.m.

Per the Daily News:
The victim, who is in his 40s, was outside the Starbucks on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place, across the street from Tompkins Square Park, about 6:15 a.m. when he got into an argument with the skateboarder, cops said.

As the two men came to blows, the skateboarder pulled out an "edged object" and jammed it into the victim’s side by his ribs, cops said.
PIX 11 said the suspect fled the scene on a skateboard and headed toward Tompkins Square Park. No word on what led to the altercation. EMTs took the victim to Bellevue.

This is the second stabbing in the vicinity in recent days. Last Friday night around 11:30, a man was stabbed while sitting on a bench inside the park near Avenue A and Seventh Street.

Anyone with information that could help in the investigation is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). You may also submit tips online. All calls are strictly confidential.

  1. There was another 2 stabbing on Sunday at Tompkins Square Park. I think one was inside the Park, and the other on Ave A and 9th Street on the East side of the street.

  3. Leave these guys alone!
What fool has a thirst for a beast?
From what I have observed and read, almost all confrontations of this sort start as a nasty growing verbal exchange.
That guy carries a knife-ish sharp object. Do you carry same? Have you used it in conflict before?
    Well, there you go.

  4. WTF is happening to our neighborhood? This is the second stabbing in over a week. I live here in Alphabet City and am legitimately scared more now than I ever have been. I often walk near here to grab a coffee and muffin in the early morning. I've heard stories of how dangerous this area was up until the early 2000's. Are we returning to this era again?

  5. I have lived in the EV since 1979, and in the 80s and 90s thought nothing of walking home by myself from the clubs at 4 AM; the worst that ever happened was that every now and then I would be mistaken for a hooker, but when I would explain I was not a working girl of the night, merely going home, I always got an apology and was left in peace. But the city is much crazier now than it was back then, more guns, shorter tempers, even more untreated mental illness, so for the first time in my life I have armed myself. Doesn't feel good, but I'm not taking any chances.

    1. Seriously, I was thinking the same thing. Do these people think, "I'm just gonna go for a quick morning walk around the neighborhood with a knife in tow?"

  9. When you hollow out a city's core for generations of families and small businesses, to create short-term wealth for bankers and developers, this is what you end up with.

  10. Back in the 80s and 90s there was violence, but it definitely seemed like less of it. I hate to say it in a way, but when there was a lot of open air heroin/coke dealing, the drug crews kept a lock on things. Violence was bad for business and would draw police attention so they ruled those blocks with an iron fist and for the most par made sure people stayed in line.

I am not advocating for that again, but it is somewhat of an explanation. That and the larger number of cops on foot patroling.

  11. what happened to the "Build Your Block" meetings with NCOs? Are they back now post-covid?
"Community Council meetings typically take place on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 PM in the precinct."
