This morning's earthquake occurred on a shallow fault system in New Jersey and shook for about 35 seconds, a Princeton seismologist said.“The shallower or the closer it is, the more we feel it as humans,” said Frederik J. Simons, a professor of geosciences at Princeton University.The quake originated at a depth of less than 3 miles, according to USGS.Earthquakes on the East Coast can be felt at a great distance and can cause more pronounced shaking in comparison to those on the West Coast because rocks in the region are often older, harder and more dense.

A 3.8 magnitude aftershock hit 37 miles west of Manhattan near Gladstone, N.J., around 6 last night
The USGS has information here about the possibility of more aftershocks. According to the USGS, there is a 74% chance of a 3.0 magnitude or greater aftershock over the next week. The agency also offers advice on what to do during an earthquake.

ReplyDeleteI was inside my Civil War era building which was terrifying. The shaking intensified and I thought the whole place would crumble. The sound was so strange - a loud roar. This quake was much more intense than the last one back around 2011.

ReplyDeleteAccording to Gov. Hochul, there have been three small after-shocks, and I felt the most recent one, shortly after 6 pm. From her office: "Following this morning's 4.8 magnitude earthquake, 3 much smaller aftershocks hit our region: 1.8 magnitude at 12:31pm, 2.0 magnitude at 1:14pm, and 2.0 magnitude a few minutes ago."

ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what I initially thought. Then I guessed that it might be some really heavy and massive truck bounding along my street. When I looked outside, the wasn't any truck at all.
Just a quick neighborhood alert...I saw some white dude, in his early 40's, wearing wire rimmed aviators, driving a ubiquitous small silver SUV with "white plates" (too far to really discern clearly) - scooping up pigeons in front of the Cooper Union triangle with a really big white net. He would bait them with food and then ensnare them.
These guys, more often than not, kidnap our birds for shooting ranges out in the wilds of Jersey and PA. You go in, pay a fee and shoot them like skeet with a shotgun. So keep an eye open for these creeps.
Living room swayed side to side, and the pictures and stuff on the walls rattled loudly. Very upsetting in my 140 year old building in Brooklyn Heights.
