Neighbor steps up to care for dog injured in 2nd Avenue fire that claimed owner’s life

Yesterday, a 75-year-old resident of 65 Second Ave. died from a fire that broke out in his apartment

A neighbor across the street saw the FDNY bring out the tenant's dog, Bella.

The neighbor, Dean, took in Bella and brought her to the Emergency Veterinary Hospital...
There's now a crowdfunding campaign to help pay for Bella's recovery. Per the GoFundMe appeal
While Bella's long-term prognosis is good, after numerous exams and tests, her immediate needs include receiving oxygen, IV hydration, and an overnight stay in the oxygen tank. While the long-term plan for Bella is still being figured out, and no next of kin found yet for the victim,

Dean, without hesitation, signed off on anything Bella needed at the hospital and has taken on the expense personally.

  2. Does anyone know if it's a service dog?

  3. Thank you Dean. Bella may not be a trained service dog but certainly acted like one. They were always together and neighborhood fixtures. She is a small dog, very well trained and was usually off leash. She has excellent manners and is very sweet. Will miss seeing Bobby and Bella. May he rest in peace.

  4. Hi this is Dean. Thank you all for your support, we spent the afternoon with Bella and some close friends of Robert’s at the animal ER. Bella is still in recovery and suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning as well as smoke damage to her lungs. It will be a long recovery but she is a resilient animal and we are all rooting for her. She is hoping to see you all walking around the EV soon enough. Thank you for the donations to her fund.

  12. Wow, Dean, your kindness even inspired my cold hardened heart to donate. Just curious, are you going to keep the dog? Is he with you now? Who are those vets in the picture?
