Community Board 3 to discuss new entrance to Tompkins Square Park on 10th Street

Community Board 3's Parks, Recreation, Waterfront, & Resiliency Committee meeting tonight includes this agenda item: Support to create an entrance to Tompkins Square Park on 10th Street.

The meeting notice doesn't mention where the entrance might be. Given that you can enter Tompkins on 10th Street from the basketball courts near B and the multi-purpose courts/TF near A, it seems logical that the proposed entrance would be mid-block behind the recently renovated field house.
This is a topic that will likely merit further conversation.

Tonight's meeting is at 6:30 at the BRC Senior Services Center at 30 Delancey St. (between Chrystie and Forsyth streets).

  1. what better way to quickly ruin the lovely area behind the field house!

  2. In my opinion the area behind the fieldhouse is really nice as is because of the seclusion but in reality a lot of people just don't know it's there which is kind of unfair. I think historically this was the site of the beer garden which part of me still thinks would be cool to see revived the way torch and crown has moved into union square. Another consideration is that the park doesn't really have any kind of official seeming major entrance and with the areas symmetry and passage through the field house it could be really nice. I get people like the privacy back there but I don't think this would be a huge disruption anyway since mid tenth street is probably the place regular users are least likely to enter anyway.

    1. The last thing we need is a other outlet serving alcohol in the neighborhood let alone in the park itself.

  4. Wow please don’t! The whole point of it is that it’s a nook. Just leave it alone.

  5. Who comes up with these ideas. What a waste of time and money. The park has more pressing issues. It's just like wasting money on renovating the dog run. Why? The dogs don't know the difference. Or is it for the dog owners? And what about the roadways. They are so badly damaged... our seniors or disabled can't safely walk through the park without worrying about falling in a pothole. C'mon Board 3. Do the right thing and stop the nonsense and fix what needs to be fixed for all who use the park.

  6. That would be ridiculous!!! It's the one part without people constantly walking through.

  7. Why? Leave it alone. There are already entrances on 10th on both sides.
