Saturday's opening shot

The annual Summer Streets celebration returns on the first three Saturdays of August.

Starting today (Saturday!), miles of NYC roadways will be closed to vehicles so that people can run, walk, and bike — and not on the sidewalk.

As in previous years, this car-free zone includes Lafayette, Astor Place and Fourth Avenue from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

You can find more details about Summer Streets at this link, including the sponsors, free samples and free exercise classes on Astor Place.

The City of NY touts Summer Streets as "car-free" - but never acknowledges that Summer Streets also means complete chaos and lack of essential bus Mass Transit.

Summer Streets has been expanded this year and so there will be almost no bus service on parts of the West Side and Harlem. (Reminder: biggest demographic for buses are elderly, women, POC)

Actually Summer Streets is basically recreation for bicyclists - not as many runners or walkers.

And good luck to pedestrians who need to cross the street - bicyclists mostly won't stop.

Basically bicyclists are permitted to "trump" bus users.

Hmmm....
