The bursts started around 8:45 p.m., setting off plenty of questions (and alarms) as the sounds pierced the night air.
Turns out, according to Google Gemini, the display came from
74Wythe, the hospitality venue across the river in Williamsburg.
Still, jangly nerves being what they are these days, one EVG reader said the whole thing "sounded really creepy."

Wow I heard and then saw those fireworks last night as they woke me up and I thought I was in a time warp and was back in time for July 4th for the Macys fireworks show when they had it in that area on the East River.
just wanted to say there are "rehearsal" fireworks shows and "real" ones like last night, a fair amount, during certain seasons. Sound coming from that direction (west) (across the river?) (we have a few buildings in the way of it but can see the flashes)..
For different but adjacent reasons it would be terrific it we set out to completely ban fireworks, military fly overs/air shows, helicopter tours and balloon releases in or above NYC. They are bad for our environment, our nerves and the budgets of the various governmental agencies involved. Maybe some of the activistocrats among us can get off their bike seats and have a run at this. Best jg

I am happy others were celebrating this unexpected event, but my poor cat was absolutely terrified, as he always is on July 4th during the fireworks portion of the evening. And of course, he ran off the bed and cowered near the toilet looking scared, remaining in that spot for a few hours. Such a jarring noise for humans too. Some sort of prior notice or announcement would have been helpful.
