Thousands of New Yorkers took to the streets today as part of a nationwide day of action advocating for "no work, no school, no shopping" to protest the Trump administration's immigration crackdown in Minneapolis and elsewhere.
In the East Village, there was a "ShutDown Sit-Down" outside La MaMa on Fourth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue.
"Let's sit in solidarity and show our neighbors that we care," organizers Lois Weaver and Peggy Shaw said.
On Houston Street, we spotted some students heading to Foley Square, a gathering spot for protesters.
Excellent and thank you! Hit the regime where it hurts most and extend economic protests. After 9/11, leaders begged people to “go out and shop” because they knew that if ordinary people stopped spending, the whole machine would seize up 👉🏻👉🏾👉 a quiet admission that the system runs on our cooperation, not theirs.👈👈🏻👈🏾 If they can declare it “patriotic” to consume, we can declare it our moral duty to withhold that consumption. Send a signal Wall St. and political donors cannot spin away, because nothing terrifies them more than interrupted cash flow. The people do have the power. It’s time for US to use it.
