Saturday's opening shot

A changing-of-the-signs moment yesterday at the southwest corner of Fifth Street and First Avenue, as Metro Acres Market replaced the old Rite Aid lettering.

We'll have more about the new signage (and the old signage!) and the incoming grocery on Monday.

Thank you to all the EVG readers who shared photos from yesterday!

East Village Organic forever

I live around the corner and plan on shopping there. If one of the owners is reading this go to Whole Foods on Houston and price your organics accordingly. I don't go to Key Foods because it's expensive. Good luck!!

Has anyone noticed how far out on the sidewalk they have expanded?

I’m looking forward to their opening and welcome them as an additional food shopping option particularly for those of us on first Avenue in the East Village. Perhaps they’ll give Key Food some competition and encourage some of Key Food’s prices down because Key Food’s prices are considerably higher than other stores like Whole Foods. Whole Foods has moderate pricing and sales on Tuesdays for prime members. Every little bit of savings helps nowadays when people are hurting to put food on their table for themselves and their families.

Too expensive

Key Foods is the only market in the area that is reasonably priced. I hope the new establishment has as many good deals and not overpriced like Whole Foods or Wegmans. As far as fresh produce, the only reasonable provider is the fruit and veg stand on the 6th street corner, whom I assume is away due to winter
weather.

The 4th Street Food Coop on 4th between Bowery and 2nd Avenue is a great deal. Their produce, organic, also lasts a lot longer because there is no middleman and the quality is unbeatable in the neighborhood. It is a nonprofit. 10% off for seniors, accepts EBT. You do not have to be a member but can volunteer or pay for membership and you get more of a discount. Srs do not have to be members for the discount. Quality bulk items too and it is so much better than any of these places listed above.

Mentioned it elsewhere but again: 4th Street Food Coop, Bowery/Second, is the best deal in the neighborhood. It is a nonprofit. Quality produce that lasts longer, often better than the Farmers Market. Paid members and volunteers get a discount. You do not have to be a member to get the Senior discount or to shop there. Great bulk foods: grains, oils, honey, vinegar etc, also soaps. Accepts EBT. Over 40 years in the neighborhood.
