Sometime recently, that setup, per EVG reader Terry Howell, was swapped out for a traditional bench — a new addition at this stop.
As noted here before, the lean bars aren't exactly comfortable (depending on your height), and critics have said they make bus stops less accessible — particularly for older riders and people with disabilities.
Regardless, for now, the M8 stop has something it didn't have before: an actual place to sit... that isn't the sidewalk.

That’s good news!
Why can't we have both/and? I like to lean sometimes.
Hmm. Leaning M8 westbound at East 9th St and 1st Ave. can we swap for a sundown?
Isn't it City DOT that is responsible for MTA bus stops - including bus stop seating and signage?
It is also notable that the bench was not placed by the sign.
DOT has been doing that a lot as well as moving bus stop signs away from bus shelters - it is a problem when bus drivers pull up to the sign and people sitting need to scramble.
This is obviously just a scam/skim operation
Those lean bars are hostile architecture and terrible for the elderly and disabled. They should not be allowed to be used anywhere.
Mta moving stops to screw with riders? Thats info wars material or the onion
