A production crew set up a prop newsstand this afternoon on the corner of Seventh Street and Avenue A — one of the busier corridors in the East Village, at the entrance to Tompkins Square Park.
The setup drew plenty of attention from passersby, given the steady foot traffic through the intersection.
Per a crew member: "It's a prop — the newsstand isn't real [Editor's note: Duh] and will be taken down the minute this shoot ends … soon. It's a commercial shoot for Uggs. You know, Uggs? You can see the models wearing them."
Less clear: the reaction to people doing what people do on a crowded corner on a nice spring day — stopping to look and take photos.
When we snapped a few pictures, someone from the production scolded: "Miss! You can't take pictures! Put down your camera! You are not allowed to photograph this."
Another crew member offered to "call the cops to take her camera."
For a temporary set planted in plain view at a high-traffic intersection, the no-photos stance seemed… ambitious.

Remember folks. You can take photos of anyone or anything in a public space. Goes for having your photo taken as well. You have no expectation of privacy in a public space.
Would love the hear what the cops would say when called, the audacity!
I wish we didn't cover film shoots and movie stars here on EV Grieve. Even if they happen to live or otherwise be here. I remember years ago when we would all ignore Parker Posey - in a good way - at Big Bar and she would ignore us too. But maybe that's just me. xo
Wonder if they had a permit to do shoot this ad? Did anyone see one posted?

That life-size prop newsstand and the industrial-looking light stand (as opposed to a "hand-held" light) would both mean this shoot required a permit, and their threatening to call the cops on photographers sounds like it could qualify as "asserting exclusive use of City property" (i.e., the sidewalk), which would also need a permit. Regardless, it sounds like they at least violated this part of the code of conduct for permitted shoots: "Courtesy: Cast and crew, including parking P.A.s, must refrain from the use of aggressive or physically threatening behavior when interacting with the general public. Cast and crew should be polite and respectful and must not
impede access to businesses and residences."

I saw them setting up this morning. I was wondering what they were doing. Wish I would have snapped a few photos and made them mad ;)
Wish you had asked them if they had a permit for the photo shoot. Then they may have gotten real quiet.
Someone was arrogantly blocking the sidewalk on St.Mark's near 2nd for a photo shoot last night. Didn't see any permits.

There were posted permits on both sides of A between 7th and St Mark's...
They would have gotten their permit from the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. It might be worth it to let the office know how the crew was behaving.
How hard did everyone laugh when they said "No photos! We're going to call the cops to take your camera!"
There are no laws to prevent photos being taken in public. I work in the film industry. We have to put up with actual asshole paparazzi all the time and we arent allowed to prevent them from taking pics. If we try to physically stop them, they register massive lawsuits. Part of life in the industry. Also, permits arent posted on the streets. Those are probably No parking signs covered within the permit. Once in a while small jobs post them without actually having the permission. But this doesnt look like that kind of job. Just a bummer that they tried to threaten you. Give us all a bad name in the film industry.

The audacity of some of these film crews. They should be made to contribute something $$$ to TSP.
