A new dining room for Katz's?

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

There's been some chatter about a possible dining-room expansion at Katz's on Ludlow and Houston.

Food writer Robert Sietsema flagged it on X last week ... ... and there are DOB permits on file for interior work on "a designated partial area" of the ground floor, along with plans to create two new restrooms.
Several workers on site confirmed that a space is in the works, though they didn't specify that it would be for dining. One source simply said it would be a storage and kitchen area.
For now, it's still the same classic Katz's — lines, tickets and all.

A bigger dining room should help keep the line shorter on the street (and make it easier to get a table when you have friends/family visiting who want to try Katz's) Good news!

And god bless Robert Sietsema -- he's still the best restaurant/food journalist in the city!

After Carnegie Deli closed, the lines to get into Katz's became so long, often stretching down the block, that I gave up going there. Not worth the wait to get in for this local NYer.

the last i went they had changed their pastrami-making process, it was noticeably less rich. definitely dampened my enthusiasm to brave the lines.

Born and raised new Yorker here... This was great growing up... But now most of the original spots just don't hit the same nor has that OG New York authentic feel... That "feel" was something that wasn't "forced"... New York is no longer New York
