Police are investigating a shooting this morning at Seventh Street and Avenue D.
According to early reports, one man was shot in the abdomen and arm around 10 a.m. As of 11:30 a.m., police sources said the victim was being treated at a local hospital. His immediate condition wasn't known.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing a suspect flee the scene. The suspect was wearing a black hoodie.
"We heard maybe six shots — they were so loud," said one resident who was nearby at the time. "We ducked down and called 911. Afterward, we saw smoke from the gun, and the shooter hopped on a bike and took off."
A helicopter was seen circling overhead afterward as police searched the area.
Seventh Street at Avenue D was closed to traffic as the NYPD continued its canvass.

Popular shooting spot. There have been several incidents in recent years on this block. Probably the same gangs, the same dealers beefing. There's also big fencing operation for stolen goods and packages in Jacob Riis projects off D that detectives know about but don't ever seem to bust...
I live on C and 7th. So terrifying. Usually, this is safe block. What's next? Are we as required as residents to bring some form of weaponisation as we leave our buildings each day? Are we returning to the 80's and 90's?
We began returning to the 80's-90's during the pandemic already, just without the counter culture and the artistic or musical innovations.
Update from today’s Daily News: shooting victim won’t talk to police.
I spoke to a woman recently who had just moved from Avenue D & 6th (where she had been her whole life) to jersey. She said she left because her son’s (in HS) friends were all starting to carry guns & there was gang activity and she wanted him out of there.
As per the 5/8/26 NY Daily News:
"Sources said the victim, who has 18 arrests on his record, most of which are sealed, refused to answer questions about who shot him and why."
My mom lives on 8 and D and I grew up in the area and work in the area in the war zone of the 1980’s. The area is generally safe and these events while isolated are increasing with more guns on the street.
So while unfortunate that this occurred, the area shouldn’t be painted with a broad stroke. The murder of Abdul was also senseless and has brought stepped up activity from NYPD.
This has brought increased stationary patrols by cops and it gives the “crime is out of control” crowd a reason to call for draconian fixes. What we saw in the 1980s and 90s was mass incarceration for lower level crimes which began with Operation Pressure Point when the area was literally abandoned by the slumlord and the residents were somehow the problem, when dispossession and abandonment were the ruse of the day.
I love the region and we have to address it in a rationale way and not paint the whole area as overtly dangerous. It is not. 👊
Lol at people not understanding what the problem is and it's NOT guns. A gun doesn't shoot by itself... A knife doesn't cut by itself, a pen doesn't write by itself...
Ave D is dangerous what are you on? Born and raised in the projects and the only time it saw a glimmer of hope was during the crackdown in late 90s and early 00s. The stats show it under Guiliani that it was going down. Once him and Bloomberg ended, still a bit down but then skyrocket uptrend. Not sure what bubble you're living in but GUNS are not the problem. It's PEOPLE that are the problem. A GUN does not have a motive to kill or shoots by itself. It's the person behind the gun. A knife doesn't kill on its own, the person kills. You literally can kill anyone with any object , it's not the problem of the tool, but the person behind it. And you have to get to the root cause of why people are killing their own kind... Trust me, I grew up in projects on avenue d and it def wasn't a safe place over the years. Now it's gotten worst cause of no consequences anymore. No morals. No type of fear of going to jail knowing they'll be back on the street the following week.
